London policeman charged over G20 protest death

Tuesday, May 24, 2011

An officer with London’s Metropolitan Police has been charged with causing the death of a man caught up in the G20 protests in 2009. PC Simon Harwood is accused of the manslaughter of Ian Tomlinson, who died after Harwood hit him with a baton before pushing him to the ground.

Homeless paper-seller Tomlinson was pushed from behind outside the Bank of England as he walked back from work. He died within minutes. The death was filmed and attracted international media attention.

Last year, Keir Starmer, Director of Public Prosecutions for England and Wales, announced that no charges would be brought due to conflicting medical evidence. That decision was placed under review after an inquest jury ruled last month that Tomlinson had been unlawfully killed.

Starmer met with the Tomlinson family today, informing them of his changed decision before the Crown Prosecution Service released a statement by him. In it, he explained that the inquest evidence had changed his position.

He named two areas in which the inquest has had an impact: One is extra medical evidence and the other is questioning in court to assess conflicting medical evidence from different sources. “But for the inquest, the significant conflicts in the evidence that had previously existed could not have been addressed; and the inquest process, which is less confined than a criminal trial, has allowed a degree of clarity to emerge,” said Starmer.

He adds that “the position in relation to the medical evidence about the cause of death has clearly changed,” although he cautioned that the prosecution will remain difficult owing to conflicting medical evidence. Starmer continued, saying that “it is clearly in the public interest that criminal proceedings be brought. Accordingly, a summons charging PC Harwood with the manslaughter of Mr Tomlinson has been obtained …. He will appear before [City of Westminster Magistrates’ Court] on 20 June 2011.”

by

Mike Nicholson

Now that you ve decided to undergo the Gastric Bypass Surgery, there are certain steps that you should take so as to ensure that you re as ready for the surgery as possible. Remember the bariatric surgery is all about choosing good habits, and doing what your doctor tells you to do. So, be it multivitamins, exercise, or personal hygiene, you should be at the top of everything so as to make the most out of the surgery.

Start with multivitamins (once a day) as they ll help you maintain your general well-being before and after the surgery. Taking them before surgery will also help you remember them after surgery. However, don t forget to tell your surgeon about the medicines and multivitamins that you re taking. Avoid taking Aspirin for at least 10 days before the surgery. You should also avoid other medicines, which contain aspirin.

Exercise is also going to help you prepare well for the Gastric Bypass surgery. Start with daily walks. Morning and evening walks improve circulation and makes breathing easier. So, you shouldn t miss out on this. You should also consult your bariatric surgeon for exercises, which can speed up the recovery. Start as early as you can; in fact, the earlier you start, the greater will be the benefits.

Avoid smoking and drinking at all costs. Smoking hinders proper functioning of lungs, and can increase risk of complications, such as deep vein thrombosis. Besides the known risk to the heart and lungs, smoking can also play havoc on your stomach, which can lead to a possible ulcer formation. Alcohol is equally destructive to your health. It causes gastric irritation and can cause liver damage. So, we recommend complete abstinence from alcohol for a period of one year after surgery.

You can return back to your normal routine in about two weeks, but this period may vary greatly. How soon you can get back to work depends on the type of work you do, state of health, the surgical approach, how well you re responding to medicines, etc. Your

Fall ’08 styles at New York Fashion Week: rock ‘n’ roll is here to stay

Monday, February 4, 2008

The third day of New York Fashion Week debuted styles infused in ’70s couture, punk and hard rock roots. Labels Herve Leger, DKNY and Rock & Republic unveiled their Fall 2008 lines, and continued the retro bent popular in the first two days of the world’s largest fashion show.

Max Azria’s Herve Leger label showed off his signature skintight dress in multiple styles Sunday, experimenting with knit fabric as well as coats to complement the dress. Unafraid to take risks, Azria also unveiled elaborate variations which called for sequins, ribbons and large bows, the latter of which was another nod to late ’70s fashion. Model Padma Lakshmi walked the runway for Azria, as did actress Sophia Bush and singers Joss Stone and Mandy Moore.

DKNY, the main label for designer Donna Karan, took the idea of ’70s couture and modernized it, deeming her Fall collection “eclectic glamour.” Retro styles such as bow blouses, pants bordering on the bell-bottom design, and peasant fashions were interspersed with more modern knits, silk and plaid designs for tops, dresses and jackets, respectively.

Rock & Republic’s theme was “gangster chic,” and was the biggest contributor to the hard rock feel. Unlike most shows, a complete orchestra with baby grand piano set the soundtrack for the show, which unveiled designs almost exclusively in a somber black. Designer David Cardona was credited with the rock designs, which included black suits and trenchcoats, and are a departure from the high-end denim looks the label is usually known for.

New York Fashion Week runs until Friday. On Monday Carolina Herrera and Betsey Johnson are considered to be the biggest draws at Bryant Park.

Colleges offering admission to displaced New Orleans students/International

See the discussion page for instructions on adding schools to this list and for an alphabetically arranged listing of schools.

Due to the damage by Hurricane Katrina and subsequent flooding, a number of colleges and universities in the New Orleans metropolitan area will not be able to hold classes for the fall 2005 semester. It is estimated that 75,000 to 100,000 students have been displaced. [1]. In response, institutions across the United States and Canada are offering late registration for displaced students so that their academic progress is not unduly delayed. Some are offering free or reduced admission to displaced students. At some universities, especially state universities, this offer is limited to residents of the area.

Scientists report chemotherapy cocktail may cause adult women to grow new egg cells

Wednesday, December 7, 2016

Chemotherapy is usually associated with a collection of side effects ranging from digestive problems to hair loss, but a study published this week in Human Reproduction demonstrated that female cancer patients may find they have something in common with much younger women in one specific area — their ovaries.

Scientists from the University of Edinburgh examined donated ovarian tissue from fourteen female cancer patients, most of whom had Hodgkin lymphoma, and compared it to tissue from healthy women. They found the samples from women who had been treated with a specific chemotherapeutic regimen known as ABVD not only contained greater numbers of dormant ova — egg cells — than those from women treated with harsher regimens but also more than samples from healthy women. ABVD is named for combining several drugs known as adriamycin, bleomycin, vinblastine, and dacarbazine.

These reproductive cells were not merely more plentiful in ABVD patients. They also appeared immature, “new” in the words of lead researcher Evelyn Telfer. This challenges the conventional belief that girls are born with all the ova they will ever have and the numbers can only go down as the cells are either used up by the reproductive cycle or succumb to damage or natural aging. However, further research is needed to confirm this. The study covered relatively few patients by scientific standards, and David Albertini of the Center for Human Reproduction in New York has suggested the cells may not actually be freshly grown. Instead, they may have always been there and were merely rendered more detectable by ABVD treatment.

The ability to grow new egg cells may have significant implications for women in Western societies, many of whom postpone childbearing to establish careers, sometimes into their late thirties or forties. However, Telfer warns against making use of these findings too soon: “There’s so much we don’t know about the ovary. We have to be very cautious about jumping to clinical applications.”

The experiments had been discussed earlier this year at the annual conference of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology.

Medical Device Design And Development

Medical Device Design And Development

The medical device design and development life cycle consists of three main stages: conception, design and development, and mass production.

ConceptionAs early as the device conception stage, factors relating to economic and production feasibility must be taken into account. Most medical devices will require mass manufacturing and this must be balanced against the implementation of innovative and cutting-edge product features. The planning and conception stage is therefore vital for the long-term sustainability of a project, and benefits greatly from industry knowledge and experience.Design and DevelopmentOnce a project has been deemed feasible, it’s time to develop a prototype. It can be a good idea to approach this stage with a risk-management mentality. Identifying the ways in which your device might fail or function incorrectly will allow you to design a product with patient care at the forefront of your mind. Ensure, too, that you are aware of industry regulatory requirements and the approval process you will need to submit your final product to.Mass ManufacturingAfter having designed your medical device, conducted clinical trials and gained regulatory approval, manufacturing can begin. If, at the beginning of the process, you spent time developing a plan, budget and identifying the mass manufacturing viability of your device, this stage should not pose too many problems.Standard Medical DevicesThere are many different types of devices that clinicians rely upon on a day-to-day basis to diagnose and treat patients. Whilst these devices may have been around for many years, all would have gone through the same design and development process described above.

ThermometerThermometers are used across all sectors and at all stages of treatment, from routine physical tests to emergency treatment. Electronic thermometers are a more recent development and minimise the time required to calculate the temperature of a patient. Electronic thermometers may be designed for a particular part of the body, such as the mouth, the armpit, the rectal, or the ear.ElectrocardiographsElectrocardiographs assess the electrical activity of the heart. During this assessment, heart rate and beat frequency can be recorded, these being the main two determinants of any cardiac issues. Physicians can also read an electrocardiograph to measure the size and location of each chamber of the heart. Electrocardiographs are used when assessing cardiac injury, and the effect and efficacy of drug therapy or structural implants.MRI MachineMagnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a modern medical scanning and diagnostic device. This particular device generates a low-level magnetic field that induces a reaction in the body’s atoms. The atoms within body tissues respond and the computer — connected to a scanner — measures these responses, transforming detections into a visual image of the internal functioning of the body.Medical devices allow health care providers to diagnose and treat patients, assisting individuals to overcome illness and disease. The design and development of a medical device — including thermometers, electrocardiographs and MRI machines — is a stringent process, reducing the risk of defects and playing a valuable role in improving patient quality of life.

Dan Rather resigns as anchor, to stay on as correspondent

Monday, November 22, 2004

Dan Rather has announced that he will retire on March 9th, 2005 as anchor of CBS Evening News. He will continue to be a correspondent for both of the 60 Minutes shows.

It is reported that Rather’s leaving has nothing to do with a report in 2004 regarding US President Bush’s National Guard service that was widely reported to be factually false. A CBS panel is looking into that report.

Others believe that Rather is stepping down due to this report and investigation. Howard Kurtz, a reporter for the Washington Post, states that “It’s pretty clear that Dan Rather faced a very unpalatable choice… His contract had at least two more years to run. [Should he] step down now before the outside investigative report, commissioned by CBS News expected in the next few weeks about his botching — and the network’s botching — of that story about President Bush’s National Guard service? Rather [decided] today that it would be better for him to step down on his own terms.”

Dan Rather, 74, has been the anchor for CBS Evening News for 24 years, succeeding Walter Cronkite. Rather is the third most watched anchor on United States television.

Three injured in a school shooting in Idaho, US; sixth grader in custody

Sunday, May 9, 2021

Two students and a school employee have been injured following a shooting at Rigby Middle School in Idaho, United States, on Thursday, with a sixth grader in custody.

According to Jefferson County sheriff Steve Anderson, the sixth grader — who attends the middle school and lives in Idaho Falls — pulled out a handgun from her backpack, firing the gun both in and outside the school, with a teacher managing to disarm the student. Police were called to the school at about 9:15AM local time, and the suspect was taken in the custody of the local sheriff’s office.

The trauma medical director at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center, Dr. Michael Lemon, has stated the three injured people had non-life threatening injuries to the extremities. The school employee has been treated and released from medical care. A warrant has been issued against an Idaho Falls residence in relation to the shooting.

School was cancelled in the district for Friday. The local school superintendent, Chad Martin, told “this is the worst nightmare a school district could ever face”, and “our hearts and our prayers go out to the victims and their families and all those involved”. A student at the school — 12-year-old Yandel Rodriguez — told the Associated Press “me and my classmate were just in class with our teacher — we were doing work — and then all of a sudden, here was a loud noise and then there were two more loud noises. Then there was screaming”.

Sudden Rise In The Approval Of Mortgage

Sudden Rise In The Approval Of Mortgage

Sudden rise in the approval of mortgage

by

martina smith

From past quite sometime now, there has been an increase in the number of approval as far as home loans in Britain is concerned in the month of March. This thing points put towards one thing that the market of housing of the country has started to make recovery even as there has been an exemption in the market for the people who are first time buyers. This fact was revealed by the data which was given by the Bank Of England.

The officials at the central bank were of the view that the approval for the mortgage have gone up to the figure of 49,860 in the month of March from 49,029 in the month of February. According to the forecast by the analysts there has been a down fall to 48,000.

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fgJ058zwTAA[/youtube]

The economists had expected that the approvals may come down after the expiry of a tax exemption for the buyers who are first-time in the ending of the month of March. Because of this there had been a boost in the approval of mortgages as well as in the prices of the house in the starting of the year this year.

However, these approvals are now also just above the half their pre-financial crisis level per month of a sum of 90,000.

The sum of net lending mortgage had gone up by 1 billion pounds in the month of March but had gone downwards from 1.1 billion pounds in the month of February. This thing has been in perfect line with the forecasts.

The data also makes a revelation that quite a lot of consumers had borrowed in the month of March, which has taken up the net credit of the consumer taking it up to 400 million pounds. This figure has been the highest after the month of September, this has come after an increase of 300 million pounds in the month of February. In the month of March the borrowing of the credit card had gone up by 200 million pounds, which has been the highest in crease that has come in the month of March by 200 million pounds. The net value of repayment was 100 million pounds in the month of February. The data also made suggestion that the boost in the retail sales in the month of March might be the result of credit card debt. The preference of Bank of England is gauge of supply of money.
