Types Of Squats

Types Of Squats

By Kya Grace

The squat is called the king of exercises, basically because it is a complete exercise for the entire body. This exercise with its different types is largely considered to be the best exercise for building muscles and strength.

The squat is a strength training exercise. It is primarily used to develop the muscles of the hips, buttocks and thighs. It adds power and size to the legs. It also strengthens the ligaments and bones of the entire lower body. A squat is performed by bending your knees with a barbell on your back until your haunches almost rest on your calves. This sounds simple but this is one of the toughest exercises to execute. The best place to perform squats is a well equipped gym with a personal trainer or a boot camp.

The different types of squats are based upon one’s muscle building requirements. The following are some of the important variants.

1. Power squat

The power squat is used to develop basically the gluteus and hamstring muscles. At the same time it also works the lower back a little bit. This squat is considered a better alternative than the hamstring curls or dead lifts. Normally, slightly heavier weights are used in the power squat. This makes it ideal for development of leg muscles. If you include it in your exercise regimen, then you should do it regularly.

2. Olympic squat

This is a squat which develops strength in the entire range of muscles of the lower back and not only on some select areas. Unlike other squats this one also balances the load exerted on the quadriceps and hamstrings and works them properly, thus making it an intensive all inclusive exercise. This exercise puts less pressure on the lower back. Hence it is ideal for those with lower back pain.

3. Wide stance-turned out squat

This squat’s thrust is on the inner thigh muscle more than the outer quadriceps. For people with wider hips this is an ideal squat. This squat exerts less pressure on the lower back as an upright posture is maintained throughout.

4. Front squat

Unlike all the other squats, this one is keeps the bar resting in front of the body. This is great for working out the quadriceps as the weight is concentrated in front of the body. A slight adjustment of your balance is required as your body weight will rest on your toes. Sportspersons will find this very helpful as it will condition them and increase their muscular endurance.

5. Split squat

This squat works each leg individually. Hence it will be great for those who are weaker in one leg. It generally works the gluteus muscles, while the quadriceps and hamstrings work in synergy. If you spread your legs too wide, more pressure is exerted on the hamstrings. Therefore it is advisable to be careful in this aspect.

There are again some variants of the above squats, but these are the basic squats which will give you that super body as long as they are performed under expert supervision in a gym or a boot camp.

Phone Interviews

Phone Interviews

By Barbara Wulf

Recently, one of my clients shared his experience with a phone interview that he was thrilled to receive. As the interview proceeded, Ben found he was talking to someone on a cell phone in rush hour traffic. The recruiter asked Ben to hold while he avoided rear ending the vehicle in front of him. Yes, you never know who is on the other end of the call, so remember the Boy Scout motto and ‘be prepared.’

Phone interviews are a common practice along recruiters as they save time and offer screening opportunities. So, it’s up to the job searchers to prepare for and execute the call presenting themselves in the best light. When you are job hunting, it’s a lot like being ‘on call.’ Being aware of the positions you have applied for and anticipating calls from prospective employers is your responsibility. Knowing this, you need to know how to handle a call when an employer might call and you are stepping out of the shower, at your current job, or driving your child to the dentist. Especially with our use of cell phones, calls can find us just about anywhere, anytime.

A phone interview be unscheduled or not at the perfect time or place, but remember, a call is better than no call. Some of the phone interviews will be scheduled in advance and allow you to be composed. Other interviews might just pop up and you will have to be extemporaneous.

Here are a few things to keep in mind to ‘be prepared’ for a phone interview:

Be organized with your thoughts and know what your resume says. If you are asked about your prior experience or training, have a good handle of who you are and what you have done. This is basic because the other questions can get more difficult.

Program your answering machine or cell phone so the caller feels you are a serious candidate. After you get the job, you can get creative for your friends.

Have your calendar nearby in case the caller wants to schedule a phone interview with you. The phone interview may take from 10 minutes to an hour, so allow yourself enough time and make sure you will be in a quiet place for the call.

A recruiter might call you and ask if this is a good time to talk. If so, find a quiet place to sit and be with caller. The call requires your complete attention. If it is not a good time to be interviewed, you can ask if there’s a time for you to return the call. This might be agreeable, but be aware that some recruiters want to talk to you at their convenience and may not want to call back later. So now, you have to decide if you’re up for it and ready to ‘think on your feet.’ Some work environments might have a more volatile pace or pressure cooker atmosphere. This could be a test to see if you are up for the challenge.

If you have a phone interview scheduled using your cell phone, remember to have your phone battery charged. At the beginning of the interview, ask the caller if your voice is clear.

Keep a call list. Record who called you, date, and notes of the conversation.

Phone interviews can be useful for you and recruiter. In the end you both save time and each of you can get a sense of ‘is this a job fit for you.’ Each time you interview, you always get a little savvier so relax, be yourself, and be professional. Remember, you are saving gas money and don’t have to dress up!

How To Choose A Pediatric Dentist

How To Choose A Pediatric Dentist

byAlma Abell

If you are a child, you know the importance of taking care of his or her teeth. It is also essential that you take them to visit a dentist. If you want them to have a positive experience in New York State, locating the right pediatric dentist in Massapequa becomes vital.

You do not want them to have a negative experience the first time around. This means, you need to carefully research the dentists in your area. You need to compile a list, check it twice and make sure the dentist qualifies before you make the visit a reality.

The Dentist

When you start looking at dentists, find the answers to these basic questions:

  • Is the dentist a pediatric dentist?

  • What are his or her qualifications?

  • Where did he or she obtain their degree?

  • Is he a specialist? If so, in what?

  • Does he have the support of local associations as well as national dental associations?

  • How involved is he or she in the community? This will indicate a sense of belonging and concern for where he lives that extends outside of the office

  • How long has the pediatric dentist been in practice?

Once you know this information, it is time to make a personal visit to the office. While there you can find the answers to the next set of questions.

The Office

Take the time to visit the offices of the pediatric dentists you are considering. This will give you an idea of how the office staff operates as well as the general atmosphere of the working environment. Consider the following:

  • What is the general appearance of the office? Is it comfortable, clean and child friendly? Are there toys, games and other items to occupy waiting children?

  • Does the staff take the time to talk to you and answer your questions or are they “too busy” to bother?

  • Are they willing to provide you with information on the office as well as educational material on preventing dentist visits? Instead, do they seem focused on getting children in and out?

  • Do they appear interested in the overall health of your child?

  • Does the staff seem approachable? Do they mind you asking about fees, and availability after hours and during emergencies?

  • How do they seem to be with children? How does the pediatric dentist appear to react to and interact with his patients?

  • Do you think you can trust the staff and the pediatric dentist with your child?

It is important to know the answers to all these questions before you make an appointment. It is also beneficial to your child if you can bring him or her in for a sort of “meet-and-greet” prior to the appointment. This will remove some of the fear and anxiety from the impending visit.

How important is the first visit of any child to a pediatric dentist? In Massapequa, professional dentists agree you need to do your research before you make an appointment. While this may involves some legwork, it will be beneficial for you and your child in the long run.
