UK public sector workers strike over pension rights

Wednesday, March 29, 2006Local Government workers in the UK withdrew their labour yesterday as part of a dispute over pension entitlements. The members of 11 different trades unions were involved in the 24hr strike. As the day began they declared that support for the strike was solid. Although the strikers work for local councils, their pay and conditions are agreed nationally. The Local Government Association which represents the local councils in England and Wales declared predictions that 1.5 million people would stay away from work as “wildly optimistic”.

The Unions’ complaint is that local government workers are being treated unfavourably compared to other public sector employees. They say that agreements on pensions that have been reached with civil servants, teachers and health workers will allow those staff to continue to retire at 60 while local government staff will be forced to work until they are 65. Civil servants work for national government, teachers work for local councils but have their own pension arrangements and most health workers are employed by the state-controlled National Health Service.

The Local Government Association claims that if council workers continue to be able to retire at 60, it will increase the levels of Council Tax (a tax on people living in properties which funds a proportion of local government expenditure) by 2%.

The striking workers provide a wide range of services from assisting teachers in the class room, through inspecting kitchens for hygiene to provising care to the vulnerable in society. In some places council workers collect tolls for road tunnels or manage ferries. Mainstream media have reported on the strike all day with heavy coverage of disruption to commuters where transport has been affected. The unions have emphasised the large number of their members who are women working in low paid jobs.

The Government which regulates the scheme claimed that the early retirement provisions (called the rule of 85) were age-discriminatory and had to be removed.

The strike ended at midnight. The Unions have not declared any further strike days.

The Unions involved were AEP, AMICUS, CYWU, GMB, NAPO, NIPSA, NUJ, NUT, TGWU, UCATT and UNISON.

Monday, December 31, 2007

What would you tell your grandchildren about 2007 if they asked you about it in, let’s say, 20 year’s time? If the answer to a quiz question was 2007, what would the question be? The year that you first signed on to Facebook? The year Britney Spears and Amy Winehouse fell apart? The year author Kurt Vonnegut or mime Marcel Marceau died, both at 84?

Let’s take a look at some of the international stories of 2007. Links to the original Wikinews articles are in bold.

How To Estimate Costs Of Getting A Plumber

How To Estimate Costs Of Getting A Plumber

With loads of plumbing contractors and independent plumbers out there, it’s not too difficult to find one to repair your damaged plumbing system. But estimating the cost of getting a reliable plumber is a different issue. How do you estimate the cost of getting a plumber and ensure getting your money’s worth?

Learning how to estimate the cost of a plumbing job is a necessary skill. When you know the price range of the required plumbing repair, you’re able to pick the right plumber or plumbing company that suits your budget. You minimize the risk of hiring an amateur plumber and getting shortchanged in the end. You also get to ensure that every cent you pay is worth it.

To determine the cost of a plumbing job, you must first be able to determine what the specific problem is and the necessary tools and products needed to fix it. Once you know what the plumbing job requires, you can simply visit a hardware store to get the average prices of the materials needed. From those prices, you can come up with a fair estimate of the plumbing job cost as far as materials are concerned. If you have a general idea of how plumbing products are priced, you have less chance of trusting and hiring plumbers who overcharge.

Of course, the plumber’s labor cost is another issue. Typically a plumber Los Angeles has charges $75 to $100 an hour. You must determine how much time a plumber will take to fix your plumbing problem and multiply that by the labor cost per hour.

If you’re still not sure of the estimate you’ve come up with, you can visit websites of plumbing companies or call their office to ask for free estimates. There are Los Angeles plumbers who offer these right off the bat, while others use flat rate pricing.

Estimating the cost of hiring a plumber may not be an easy task. However, if you have a general idea of how much a typical plumber charges for the kind of repair you need as well as the price of required materials, you’ll be able to find plumber Los Angeles that are well worth your money.

County Donegal, Ireland crash kills one, injures two

Wednesday, June 12, 2013

A two-vehicle road traffic accident in County Donegal in Ireland has left one person dead and injured two others. The accident occurred when a camper van collided with an oncoming car on the N15 road between the towns of Ballybofey and Donegal at approximately 1540 BST (1440 UTC) on Monday.

The fatality was reportedly a man in his 70s from the town of Lifford; he has not yet been publicly identified. He was taken to Letterkenny General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The female passenger he was travelling in the car with, thought to be the wife of the man, was taken to the same hospital after suffering serious injuries.

The man and woman in the camper van were transported to Sligo Regional Hospital. The condition of the two occupants is not clear, although the woman in the vehicle reportedly injured her leg in the accident.

The road where the crash occurred was closed to allow the Garda to investigate the incident.

Former Japanese princess Mako Komuro moves to New York with commoner husband

Monday, November 15, 2021

Mako Komuro and her husband, Kei Komuro, travelled to New York yesterday to start a new life together outside of the Japanese Royal Family. Their relationship had been heavily criticized by members of the public in Japan due to its unconventional nature and breaking social norms for the nation. The couple arrived at Tokyo’s Haneda International Airport to much media attention and under heavy security.

Mako Komuro, a former princess and niece of the Japanese emperor, gave up her title in order to marry Kei Komuro, her college sweetheart. While Japan is generally modern in many ways, the status of women and family values are still rooted in feudal practices; Japanese royalty are forbidden from marrying “commoners”.

New York was chosen because Kei has a job at a New York law firm, though he has yet to pass the New York bar exam. According to the Associated Press, this fact was used by Japanese media to discredit and attack him, despite it being common place to not pass a bar exam on the first attempt. Comparisons have been drawn by The Straits Times between scrutiny that they have suffered and that of the Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex of the British royal family.

Four Classic Tiki Cocktail Recipes

Four Classic Tiki Cocktail Recipes

By Jerry Swanson

In the past few years there has been an amazing interest in Tiki bars and Tiki cocktails of yesteryear. Thoughts of Tiki culture may bring back memories of bartenders in colorful shirts from classic television programs or thatch-roof Tiki bars but whatever your memories of Tiki bars entail, these bars are making a comeback.

The good news is that it’s easy to make some of these popular Tiki cocktails at home, without any special equipment and with supplies found at your local store. What you will find with Tiki cocktails is that rum is normally the key ingredient and then it’s mixed with either a fruity or sour flavor and many are topped with fruit, a flower, or umbrella to add a little island flare.

Whether you are hosting a tiki party or just looking to mix up something a little different at happy hour, tiki cocktails offer a tropical twist to you or your guests. Beware the strength of these cocktails though – a couple of rum-loaded Zombies can leave the common man on the floor!

A number of popular Tiki cocktails are fun choices:

The Zombie

Named after its effect on the drinker, the Zombie was first served up in the 1930’s by the famous Donn Beach. It’s smooth, fruity taste can easily disguise the power of the alcohol contained in the Zombie. Ingredients in the Zombie can vary but one popular recipe includes: 1 oz of lemon juice, 1 oz of dark rum, oz orange juice, oz of cherry brandy, oz of rum, oz of high-proof dark rum and 2 dashes of grenadine.

Mai Tai

Another popular Tiki drink by Donn Beach, the Mai Tai was another drink first served in the 1930’s. The word maitai translated from Tahitian to English means good, which is an appropriate name for the drink. One of the many Mai Tai recipe includes: 1 oz of Jamaican rum, 1 oz of Martinique rum, oz of Orange Curacao, oz of Orgeat syrup, oz of rock candy syrup, juice from 1 fresh lime. A sprig of fresh mint may be added as well.

Navy Grog

First made in the 1700’s by an admiral in the Royal Navy in Britain, this unique drink as stood the test of time. Many versions of the drink exist and one popular recipe includes: 1 oz of Grapefruit, 1 oz of Orange juice, oz of Grand Marnier, 1 oz of Pineapple juice as well as an oz of 3 types of rum; Light Rum, Gold Rum and Dark Rum.

151 Swizzle

Yet another drink popular in Tiki bars, first served up by Donn Beach after traveling to Montego Bay for inspiration. The 151 Swizzle can be made several different ways and one popular recipe for this interesting drink includes: oz of sugar syrup, oz fresh Lime juice, 1/8 tsp of Pernod, 1.5 oz of 151 Demerara rum, a dash of Angostura bitters and a dash of Ground nutmeg.

The above are just a few of these iconic drinks first served by the famous Don the Beachcomber in his famous Tiki bars. Many different variations have been invented and tweaked, but nothing beats the original drinks.

Migrant workers in Dominos Pizza ‘slavery’

Friday, August 10, 2007

Eight Hungarian migrant workers sacked from a Domino’s Pizza franchise in Derby, England are said to have taken home virtually no pay for months because of illegal deductions.

The claim is refuted by the company who said in a statement “We have begun a thorough investigation during which we have scrutinised the franchisee’s employment practices. This took place with his full co-operation. The franchisee concerned is confident that he possesses the evidence required to refute these allegations. To the extent that we have been informed of all allegations and have reviewed all available evidence, we also believe this to be the case.”

The sacked workers are being supported in their claim by the workers union Unite. The union say the “there appeared to be a deliberate strategy of keeping the workers in debt to the company through a series of crippling deductions. The deductions included payments to cover the contract purchase of a car from their employer, insurance for the vehicle provided through their employer, and exorbitant rent for substandard accommodation, again provided through their employer. In addition, some workers had to pay fees of up to £180 for an “introduction” to the company. One worker earned just £5 in four months because of the constant and hefty deductions out of his wage packet. When the workers protested they were sacked.”
