Indian steel giant stops business with Russia

Saturday, April 23, 2022

On Wednesday, Indian steel giant, Tata Steel announced it was cutting all business ties with Russia. This made Tata Steel the latest multi-national company to stop business with Russia following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

A spokesperson from the company’s European division, Tata Steel Europe, said in a statement it “does not have any operations or employees in Russia”.

The company added, its steel manufacturing units in India, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands had arranged for raw materials to be sourced from elsewhere ending its dependence on Russia.

With the announcement, Tata Steel became one of the few Indian companies to halt business activities in Russia. Last week, Infosys, India’s second largest information technology company announced it had stopped its operations in Russia.

The Indian Government has not yet condemned the Russian invasion by taking a neutral stand amid pressure from Western countries.

CEO of GM outlines plan for “New GM” after auto company declared bankruptcy

Thursday, June 4, 2009

In a New York press conference at 16:15 UTC, June 1st, Fritz Henderson, the Chief Executive Officer of General Motors, which filed for bankruptcy and Chapter 11 protection from its creditors earlier today, outlined a plan for what he called a “New GM”.

Speaking to the press under safe harbor provisions of U.S. law, Henderson described the events of today as a “defining moment” in the history of General Motors. Speaking to the public he said that “The GM that let you down is history,” and described a “New GM” that he expected to result from the bankruptcy process.

Henderson stated that he envisioned the bankruptcy process would take between 60 and 90 days. He stressed several times his view that the process would be one that is executed quickly, saying that not just a sense of urgency but “pure unadulterated speed” was his expectation of the process. He emphasized that “GM remains open for business” during the bankruptcy period, continuing to sell and to support its products, and that day one motions had been filed in the bankruptcy court in order to allow this.

Regarding the bankruptcy process he said, “We will do it right. And we will do it once.”

He stated that the plan for General Motors had the support of the United Auto Workers union, the Canadian Auto Workers union, the GM VEBA, and a majority of the unsecured bondholders of GM. He also mentioned that GM had already received €1.5 million in bridge financing from the German government.

In response to questions about the possibility of the United States federal government, a majority shareholder in the restructured company, dictating future product development and strategy, such as the sale of more fuel-efficient and green vehicles; he first observed that the federal government had already stated to him that it had “no real interest in running our business” and that he expected that still to be his job. Of the specific hypothetical scenario where the management of GM wants to make one type of car, because it thinks that it is the right thing for the business, and the U.S. government wants to make another type of car, he stated that “I don’t think it’s going to happen.” Expanding on that point he stated that he expected the “New GM” to focus upon “highly fuel-efficient and green technology”, and that operating both in accordance with U.S. environmental laws and in response to customer demand would naturally result in the New GM producing the types of vehicles that the U.S. government would encourage.

The “New GM” he also expected to focus on “four core brands”, and will size its dealership to match that. He stated that GM would offer a “deferred termination” package to dealers, to allow them to cease dealing in GM vehicles in a managed and gradual way.

He stated that the bankruptcy filings did not cover General Motors’ businesses in Latin America, Europe and the Middle East, and Asia and the Pacific. Of GM’s profitable ventures in China, specifically, he stated that they were “a critical part of the New GM”. In response to questions of whether the New GM would import cars from China to the U.S., he stated the formative company’s core principle that “We build where we sell” applied in both directions, with GM building in China to sell in China and building in the U.S. to sell in the U.S., stating that this shortened supply chains.

He declined to predict when the New GM would return to profitability, stating that the goal was rather to lower the break-even EBIT point for the company. He also declined to speculate upon when the U.S. government would sell its stake in the company, saying that that was a question “better addressed to the U.S. Treasury”, and merely saying that he expected it to be “years, not months” when the U.S. Treasury felt it would give “the right return for taxpayers.”

Norfolk youths banned from buying eggs and ketchup

Wednesday, April 9, 2008

Youths in the Norfolk town of Caister-on-Sea, near Great Yarmouth, England, have been banned from purchasing “squirty bottles” of ketchup, and eggs after a number of complaints from residents in the area. The move, which is backed by the Norfolk Police, is aimed at reducing the number of anti-social incidents occurring in the area. Sergeant Andy Brown, of the Norfolk Police, has said that no further complaints have been received since the ban came into force.

I know it sounds a bit daft, but it has made a difference because we’ve had no more reported incidents since the supermarkets came on board.

While squirting ketchup itself is not a criminal offence, the damage that it can cause, such as removing paint from cars or houses, is often enough to bring charges of criminal damage. Sgt Brown said that there were “about a dozen complaints from residents, some of them elderly, about people squirting ketchup over doors, windows and vehicles.” Martin Bailie, a spokesperson for Lidl supermarkets, has defended his staff’s actions, saying “the stores’ staff were [already] challenging youngsters who were trying to bulk buy these things. It wasn’t that we haven’t been selling eggs and ketchup to youths, but have been careful about who we have sold them to, and we are glad it has been making a difference.”

UAE launches national authority for scientific research

Wednesday, March 19, 2008

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has announced its first national authority for scientific research (NASR) to coordinate and fund scientific research in the country.

The national authority for scientific research was announced on March 7 by Shaikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, UAE minister for higher education and scientific research. NASR will begin with an annual budget of AED100 million (approximately US$27.2 million). The authority hopes to receive additional contributions from the public and the private sector.

NASR will look to fund research projects in various fields, including engineering, technology, medicine, water and agriculture, proposing specific projects to be competed for by researchers at universities and private research institutes.

“Projects are going to be selected to help promote scientific research and the growth of UAE society and we will compare them with international scientific research criteria,” Gulf News quoted Al Nahyan as saying at the launch.

NASR will also train scientists and develop programmes for promoting public science awareness. It will also coordinate with government authorities on the issue of intellectual property rights, by providing advice on how companies and research centres should go about protecting their discoveries in the form of patents or licenses. It will also provide scholarships for researchers in the UAE to work on international research programmes, and organise national scientific conferences. NASR forms part of the UAE’s strategic plan to improve higher education and scientific research.

Zakaria Maamar, associate professor at the College of Information Technology at Zayed University, UAE, told Science and Development Network (SciDev.Net) that, “This initiative is another boost to the research and development activities that are carried out in the UAE. It will definitely provide researchers with the appropriate funds to sustain such activities and promote best practices in the community.”

Said Elnaffar, assistant professor at the college of information technology at the United Arab Emirates University, told SciDev.Net that, with this initiative, the UAE is taking the lead and setting a good example by building a strong development infrastructure founded on knowledge discovery and research.

<div class=Thinktank recommends changes to Australian student fees

Thinktank recommends changes to Australian student fees

Tuesday, February 28, 2006

The Centre for Independent Studies has released a paper calling for reform of university student fees system. The paper, authored by Andrew Norton, argues that the cap on loans to full fee paying students is too low. The current cap allows for loans during a lifetime of AU$50,950.

“Setting the FEE-HELP limit at this amount biases the market against courses that are long or have high per year costs, or both,” argues Norton in the paper. “The loan cap is a crude way of controlling lending, taking no account of course costs or capacity to repay.”

According to Norton, this undermines student choice and competition. He argues that the system should function more like commercial lending.

“A truly radical reform would make student loans mimic commercial loans: students with good earning prospects could borrow large sums, other students could borrow less, and some could not borrow at all,” he said. “Instead of denying or limiting loans to people doing high cost courses, as now occurs, the government could deny loans to people who are unlikely to repay.”

The paper was criticised by Senator Kerry Nettle, Education Spokesperson for the Australian Greens. She argued that the changes would mean an increase in costs to students already struggling to pay, and called on Education Minister Julie Bishop to rule out the changes.

“To consider refusing loans to those deemed less able to repay would further cut off higher education for Australians from low socio-economic backgrounds,” she said. “Julie Bishop should use her address to the National Press Club tomorrow to rule out any moves to further deregulate the HECS system.”

“Student fees have spiralled upward under the Howard government and any further deregulation would just make a bad system worse,” she added.

Gladeya

Paper was once considered a safe substitute for plastic. People were encouraged to use paper more and reduce the use of plastic as much as possible. The reason behind this was the large-scale environmental degradation brought about by plastic. Being so durable, plastic was thought to take thousands of years to decompose, thereby contributing to environmental pollution. When the situation started going from bad to worse, people decided to take some concrete steps to contain the menace of plastics, and the use of paper seemed to be the right decision at that point. People stopped using plastic bags and started using paper bags in their place.

The demand to curb the use of plastics also brought about a green revolution in the cosmetic industry. People demanded the use of natural materials for packaging cosmetic products, and paper was the unanimous choice as it is a biodegradable material. However, contrary to popular belief, the decision to use paper in the place of plastic was not a good environmental solution. Instead of making the planet greener, better and healthier, it paved the way for further environmental degradation. How the Use of Paper Contributed to Environmental DegradationThough paper is a natural material, the production and use of paper can affect the environment adversely. Let us see how.Deforestation – Deforestation is one of the major causes of paper consumption since the raw material used for making paper is mainly trees. As the demand for paper increased, more trees were cut down to meet the requirements for wood pulp. It is estimated that around 12-24 trees are required to manufacture one ton of paper. This naturally resulted in deforestation and the loss of wildlife habitats and ecosystems. Moreover, as forests disappeared, the concept of managed forests for growing coniferous softwoods was introduced. However, this singular focus on one tree species adversely affected the biodiversity of the whole forest.Rise in Greenhouse Gases and Climate Change – Trees are essential for sustaining life on earth as they uses carbon dioxide for their growth. However, when trees are cut down, the level of greenhouse gases (GHGs) increases in the atmosphere. Though a balanced amount of greenhouse gases, comprised of carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and fluorocarbons (typically chlorofluorocarbons and hydro fluorocarbons) is essential, excessive amounts can prove fatal. The rise in GHGs paved the way for climate changes, which in turn caused further degradation of the forests by causing droughts and forest fires. How to Minimize Wood-Pulp Paper WasteBuying Recycled Paper Products – Though the recycling of paper itself does not save trees, it can go a long way toward reducing air pollution and saving water and energy. Recycling paper requires half the amount of water and energy required to make paper because most of the energy and water in papermaking is required during the manufacturing of wood pulp. Moreover, it causes less water and air pollution compared to virgin paper. Consumers can play a greater role in reducing paper pollution by insisting on cosmetic products where the cartons used for holding the lotion pumps or containers are made of recycled paper.Discouraging Excessive Packaging – Decorating and accessorizing cosmetic products is the bane of the cosmetic industry. Manufacturers dress up their products using cloth, cardboard, ribbons, sequins and so on that serve no real purpose. It can only contribute to creating tons of waste that in most cases ends up in landfill sites.Encouraging Treeless Paper – When buying products, look for packaging that has been made from treeless paper. Paperfoam is a treeless paper that is biodegradable as well as recyclable. Use of tree free papers such as coffee paper, banana paper and lemon paper must also be encouraged. It is high time that cosmetics manufacturers and cosmetic packaging manufacturers realize the damaging effects of paper on the environment and take some steps to prevent it.
