The Role Of Nurses In Today’s Health Care Industry

The Role Of Nurses In Today’s Health Care Industry

By Karen P Williams

The nurse’s role in healthcare has changed dramatically over the last few decades. In the mid-20th century, nurses often served only a few main causes-such as being midwives and giving basic care to patients-and were not nearly-as respected and independent as their doctor superiors. The last few decades have turned that stigma upside down, though. Modern nurses can further their careers all the way up to the Ph D level and some even have their own practice.

The Modern Nurse and Responsibilities of

Roles of modern nurses are very broad and often interlope. Depending on your education and licensing level, you can do anything from helping RN’s and doctors, to providing support in the O.R. and even to becoming a fully-fledged Nurse Practitioner, or NP. Just like many industries, you have to climb the career ladder and you do so by pursing as much education as possible and getting all the licenses (NCLEX-PN, NCLEX-RN, etc) needed to be successful in your career.

Moving forward, let’s take a look at roles of nurses in accordance to their educational/licensing attainments:

Most aspiring nurses these days begin their career as a medical assistant. If you are a fledgling nurse, this is the best place to be in the beginning. All it takes is a few quarters of vocational school and you are certified. Of course you want to move up in the world, right?

LPN’s (or LVN’s) have received an Associate degree in nursing and have passed the NCLEX-PN exam. On attaining this level of stature, you are very well on your way! The pay will be greater, and you will typically have the opportunity to provide leadership to medical assistants or medical aides. Generally speaking, you will be the ‘middle-man’ between the MA and the RN (Registered Nurse).

If you decide to open many more doors, consider becoming a fully-fledged RN. The many different types and roles of RN’s are extremely wide in scope. A Bachelor degree is required (BSN) from an accredited nursing school, and you must pass the national NCLEX-RN exam

And, if you have aimed for the stars and gotten your Master degree in nursing, the APRN

(Advanced Practice Registered Nurse) is well in sight. This is the top of, or very near, the career ladder of any nurse. A Master’s degree (MSN or MN) is required, as generally all the experience you got from being a lower-level nurse is. Common descriptions include: CRNA (Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists), NP (Nurse Practitioner) and CNM (Certified Nurse Midwife).

Watch Out Doctors!

Your journey to the top is near complete. However, if even the top isn’t good enough for you, join the ranks of doctors! The DNP, or DrNp (Doctor of Nursing Practice) is the gold medal of nursing and, essentially, signifies that you have reached the extreme top of your game. This will require at least partial study in the PhD degree level and it varies from state-to-state.

Those are your options for becoming a nurse and that is the roles that they carry out. This guide is not meant to imply that you are required to rise to the very top (as most nurses are very happy once they have attained RN status) it only shows all the ‘rungs’ you can aspire to climb before you are ultimately satisfied and happy in your career.

Two teenagers charged in alleged school attack plot

Saturday, July 14, 2007

Two Long Island, New York teenagers, aged 15 and 17, have been charged for their alleged involvement in a suspected plot to attack their school next April, on the ninth anniversary of the Columbine High School shooting massacre.

The plot was uncovered when the 15-year-old suspect lost his journal at the McDonalds restaurant where he worked. The journal was found by a fellow classmate of the teenagers’ school, who quickly turned it over to school officials.

The journal is alleged to have outlined the teenagers’ plan to attack the school with guns and home-made bombs. The 15-year-old suspect’s home and computers were searched and evidence was collected, which revealed that he allegedly tried to purchase black powder explosives and machine guns over the Internet.

A video was also found in which the same teenager allegedly names some students and staff he would like to attack at the school. The 17-year-old was allegedly planning to aid in the attack on the school.

The two teens were arrested and held in Long Island jail on misdemeanor conspiracy, which is punishable by up to one year in prison. The 15-year-old will appear in juvenile court on Friday and the 17-year-old suspect is expected to plead not guilty at a hearing.

Wikinews interviews British sensory biologist Dominic Clarke about floral electric fields and bees

Sunday, February 24, 2013

Last Thursday, British sensory biologist Dominic Clarke and other authors published research about detection of floral electric fields by bees in journal Science. The research involved studying bees’ reaction to flowers with different electric fields. The researches concluded that bees can choose flowers based on their electric fields, and remember them as they do with color and other characteristics of flowers.

This Friday Wikinews interviewed Dominic Clarke about the research.

((Wikinews)) What caused your initial interest in electric fields of flowers?

Dominic Clarke: There has been a considerable amount of speculation in the scientific literature since the 60s about the role of electric fields in pollination. It has been suggested that the electric field that arises between a charged bee and a grounded flower may be responsible for increasing the efficiency of pollen transfer between the two. We looked at this literature as sensory biologists and naturally formed the question ‘can bees sense these fields?’. Since we couldn’t find any answers to that question in the literature, we decided to find out for ourselves.

((WN)) How was the new phenomenon discovered?

DC: We use what’s called ‘differential conditioning’, where bees are trained to find a sucrose reward from an array of flowers, where only half of the flowers contain the reward. In our experiment, the flowers that were rewarded (with a sugary solution) were marked with a small electric field (about the same strength as around a flower in the wild). The ones that were not rewarded were not marked with fields. Since the electric field is the only thing that differs between the two flowers, we know that if the bees can learn to tell them apart, they can sense the electric field. Our bees were able to pick the rewarded flower 80% of the time when the electric field was present as a cue. When the electric field was switched off, they could only get it right half the time, which is the same as if they were just picking flowers at random.

((WN)) How many species of flowers and bees did you study during your research?

DC: We focus on one species of bee, the bumblebee Bombus terrestris. And we look mainly at Petunia flowers (P. integrifolia). These two species provide the bulk of our data, but we do consider other flowers like geraniums, daisies, clematis and foxglove, and other species of bee (particularly the honeybee Apis mellifera).

((WN)) Do you have diagrams, sketches, or drawings of electric field around a bee and a flower?

DC: I have attached a picture of a computer model of the electric field around a flower called “Flower Potentials and Fields”.

((WN)) Was it known that bees have a charge before?

DC: Yes, reports as early as the 70s have measured electrical charge on bees, but it was not known before whether or not they could sense such charges.

((WN)) What environment did you study the flowers and bees in? A laboratory? A garden? Natural environment?

DC: The behavioural tests were carried out in a laboratory because we needed to be able to precisely control the environment in which the bees were tested. Future work will be aimed at trying to get out into the bees’ natural environment and trying to figure out exactly what role(s) this sense plays in their lives.

((WN)) What equipment was used during the research? How did you measure the charge?

DC: Charge was measured using a device called a “Faraday Pail”. It is basically an electrically shielded metal cup, the voltage of which changes according to how much charge is inside it. We can measure this voltage when a bee flies in and so measure its charge. We did this with 51 individual bees.

((WN)) What were the roles of the people involved in the research? What activity was most time-consuming?

DC: It was very collaborative in all aspects of the research. I carried out the bulk of the experimental work and data analysis, but the process of designing the experiment, figuring out how to do the analysis, choosing which ideas to follow and which to put on the shelf etc., that is highly collaborative. Then of course comes the long period of writing, re-writing, re-re-writing, sending out to colleagues for feedback, re-re-re-writing, submission, peer-review, editing re-submission etc. which is also a collaboration between all the authors. A large part of doing science is talking as well; meeting, planning brainstorming. It feels to me like putting together the paper took the longest, but perhaps that’s just because it’s the most fresh in my mind.

((WN)) What do you see as possible directions for future research in this field? What do you think possible applications of the discovery can be?

DC: The two big questions now are “how do the bees do this?” and “why do they do this?”. The first is a case of pinning down the sensory mechanism used by the bees to detect the fields, and the second will involve a great deal of field-based experiments. We need to get out of the laboratory and understand the role this phenomenon plays in the lives of bees in the wild.

((WN)) Thank you for sharing your insight and details. Have a good time.

Anti-poverty group splatter B.C. premier’s office with paint

Saturday, February 23, 2008

The Anti-Poverty Committee (APC) has taken full responsibility for four people splattering latex paint on the front of British Columbia premier Gordon Campbell‘s office in Vancouver Thursday afternoon. They tried to break into the office and frightened staff.

The four were described as three women and one man wearing white painter suits and face masks. One was recording the event on video. A constituency assistant said they put posters on the outside of the building. They splattered the front of the building with paint.

The paint represented three official colours of the Olympic flag; yellow, red and green.

“I think the activists should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” said the premier. “Frankly, this is about seeing their faces on television.”

Attorney General of British Columbia Wally Oppal spoke out against the group: “It’s disturbing when you have people like these, who are continually intimidating law-abiding citizens and I think the public is getting sick and tired of this group.”

The group vandalised and broke into Campbell’s office in Vancouver last May when they posed as a flower delivery service and quickly ransacked his office breaking windows and throwing pictures, office documents, and various other items. They also threw yellow paint and put posters on the Olympic Clock in downtown Vancouver last April.

They believe that poor citizens are losing their homes due to the money spent and developments near the city on preparation for the long-awaited 2010 Winter Olympics.

“Why we went to the premier’s office was to protest the budget, the lack of any real money being spent on what poor people need, you know, housing, not hotels but real social housing,” said David Cunningham, a spokesman for the group. The budget has “billions of dollars compounded in surplus at the expense of poor people’s lives,” he told the CBC.

Cunningham said the group will not stop the “criminal acts” until the government’s budget surplus is spent on social housing and on the citizen’s.

“Just after 2 p.m. a group of people attended the premier’s office … and threw paint on the exterior of the building,” said Const. Jana McGuinness of the Vancouver Police Department. “This is a criminal charge. This is mischief, so if charges are warranted we’ll definitely be laying charges.”

No arrests were made as the four managed to leave before police arrived.

Joint Pains No More

Joint Pains No More

By Robert Corter

Joint pains can be really disturbing. Approximately 1 out of 70 UK adults suffer from gout. In the United State, it is estimated to be 840 out of every 100,000 people. The most debilitating aspect of having gout is its inflammatory effect on joints causing pain that has a significant effect on daily living.

Benjamin Franklin once said, “Be temperate in wine, in eating girls, and sloth; or the Gout will seize you and plague you both.” There is truth to that. In fact, eating certain foods can exacerbate joint pains. First of all, gout is caused by increased uric acid in the body, which forms deposits in joints and tissues causing inflammation that leads to painful joints with stiffness. The culprit in this exacerbation of pain is food high in purines, which are chemical compounds that form uric acid once metabolized by the body.

One thing that can make a great impact on the lives of those affected with gout is to know which foods are the ones that should be avoided. This includes organ meats, certain fishes, grain, alcohol, legumes and vegetables.

It is best that patients with gout avoid organ meats namely, hearts, kidneys, testicles and brain which contain high purines that cause increased levels of uric acid. The tongue is particularly high in purines as well a mincemeats, broths, meat extracts and bouillons. Other meats include those of goose, duck, partridge, pheasant and turkey

Aside from meat, seafoods can also cause gout pains. These include anchovies, mackerel, herring, sardines, mussels and scallops. Eating fish eggs can also increase uric levels acid as well as haddock and salmon.

Even vegetables, though known to be healthy for most people, can increase uric acid in the body. The main vegetables to be avoided are peas, spinach, asparagus, cauliflower, beans, lentils and mushrooms. It is true that these vegetables are nutritious but for those afflicted with gout, it may just cause exacerbation of signs and symptoms.

Grains are also sources of purines. Whole grain cereals, breads, wheat bran and oatmeal wheat germ should be taken in moderation as these foods are sources of purines. These foods are common in the diet so, one should really think on how they can avoid these as much as possible.

What patients with gout should really avoid is alcohol as it contains high levels of purine that can trigger inflammation and stiffness of joints. Beer in particular is high in purines together with wine and hard liquor. In brewing alcohol, yeast is used which contains significant levels of purines. In fact, it is also used in baking.

It is difficult to cut these foods in the diet, however patients with gout should consider modifying their lives to lessen joint pains. The solution to this is moderation. Of course, one cannot live life normally without eating meat, fish, bread and alcohol. However, for these people, eating only a small portion is enough. It may surprise them as to how it can significantly reduce inflamed and painful joints.

Latest trial of the One Laptop Per Child running in India; Uruguay orders 100,000 machines

Thursday, November 8, 2007

India is the latest of the countries where the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) experiment has started. Children from the village of Khairat were given the opportunity to learn how to use the XO laptop. During the last year XO was distributed to children from Arahuay in Peru, Ban Samkha in Thailand, Cardal in Uruguay and Galadima in Nigeria. The OLPC team are, in their reports on the startup of the trials, delighted with how the laptop has improved access to information and ability to carry out educational activities. Thailand’s The Nation has praised the project, describing the children as “enthusiastic” and keen to attend school with their laptops.

Recent good news for the project sees Uruguay having ordered 100,000 of the machines which are to be given to children aged six to twelve. Should all go according to plan a further 300,000 machines will be purchased by 2009 to give one to every child in the country. As the first to order, Uruguay chose the OLPC XO laptop over its rival from Intel, the Classmate PC. In parallel with the delivery of the laptops network connectivity will be provided to schools involved in the project.

The remainder of this article is based on Carla G. Munroy’s Khairat Chronicle, which is available from the OLPC Wiki. Additional sources are listed at the end.

Drug-resistant staph deaths surpass AIDS in the United States

Wednesday, October 17, 2007

Methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), a drug-resistant strain of bacteria, killed nearly 19,000 Americans in 2005 alone, according to a new study in the Journal of the American Medical Association. That is more people than were killed by AIDS in the United States. More than 94,000 Americans were afflicted with MRSA infections in 2005.

Although the supergerm, or superbug, is primarily found in hospitals, a growing number of cases have been contracted at public gyms and schools. In Moneta, Virginia, a high school senior died from an infection that spread to his kidney, liver, lungs and heart. In Bedford County, where Moneta is located, school officials have reported five cases of the Methicillin-resistant strain of the Staph bacteria. County officials closed the schools to clean them.

“Certainly, MRSA now has to be viewed as a very important target for prevention and control,” said Dr. David A. Talan, an infectious diseases specialist at Olive View-UCLA Medical Center.
