Maker Faire 2009 wraps up in San Mateo, California

Thursday, June 4, 2009

The fourth annual Maker Faire took place this past weekend at the San Mateo Fairground in San Mateo, California located in the United States. The first Maker Faire, which took place in 2006, had approximately 20,000 people in attendance. This year, more than 80,000 people were expected to attend; quadruple the attendance of just four years prior. On Saturday night, it was reported that attendance was up considerably over last year’s event.

Maker Faire, the self-declared “World’s Largest DIY Festival”, offers a forum where hundreds of makers and crafters alike man booths where they display their work. In the main halls alone, there were hundreds of booths. Outside the expo halls, the surrounding area was also filled with many interesting projects, some of which were mobile. In addition to all of the projects on display, there were a number of on-stage presentations. The biggest presentation of the weekend was given by Adam Savage who spoke on the topic of his “Colossal Failures”. During his talk, the Fiesta Hall was filled to capacity.

The theme for this year’s fair was “Remake: America” after President Obama‘s call to “begin again the work of remaking America”. In addition, “going green”, alternative fuel vehicles, crafting, steampunk and sciences for the young, were common themes found throughout the fair.

Study says dogs can smell lung and breast cancer

Monday, August 7, 2006

Dogs can be trained to detect early and late stages of lung and breast cancer accurately according to a study published by California scientists in the little-known scientific journal Integrative Cancer Therapies.

The study took place over the last five years at the Pine Street Foundation, a non-profit organization which conducts evidence-based research on integrative medicine (combining complementary and alternative medicine and mainstream medicine). Michael McCulloch and colleagues used three Labrador Retrievers and two Portuguese Water Dogs, both common pets, that received basic behavioral dog training. The researchers trained the dogs to lie down next to a sample from a cancer patient and to ignore other samples.

The samples used were breath samples from 55 patients with lung cancer and 31 with breast cancer — the two types of cancer with the highest mortality rates in the United States.

After the training phase, the dogs’ accuracy diagnosis was tested in a double-blind experiment. Among lung cancer patients, the sensitivity and specificity were 99% accurate and for breast cancer sensitivity was 88% and specificity 98%. Because these figures seem almost too good to be true, cancer experts are the same time baffled and skeptical. The authors of the study themselves also say replication of the study is needed.

Importantly, this was independent of the cancer stage, meaning the dogs were able to pick up the scent of cancer in its early stages. This is important because in many cases, the success of any treatment depends on early diagnosis. However, the researchers don’t believe this will lead to the use of dogs in the clinic soon, rather they want to find out which chemicals are actually sensed by the canines, because they could be used in laboratory assays. “It’s not like someone would start chemotherapy based on a dog test,” Dr. Gansler of the American Cancer Society said, “They’d still get a biopsy.”.

The researchers were inspired by anecdotal reports about dogs detecting cancer. In 1989, a British women consulted with her family physician because her Dalmatian kept licking a mole on her leg. At biopsy it showed to be malignant melanoma. When diagnosed too late this form of cancer has a poor survival rate, but in this case early surgery was made possible, and the women survived. Prior studies showed that breath samples from patients with lung cancer or breast cancer contain distinct biochemical markers. This provides a basis for the hypothesis that some cancer types produce volatile chemicals that dogs could smell. A study published in the British Medical Journal already proved that dogs could use their exquisite sense of smell to detect bladder cancer in urine samples, but they were only correct in 41% of cases, and another study provided preliminary evidence that dogs could detect melanomas.

This doesn’t mean you can show your breasts to your dog and it will tell you if you have cancer, other physicians caution, and scientists do not advise people to train their dogs to sniff for cancer. Unresolved issues from the study include the fact that subjects were required to breathe deeper than normal, so it’s not sure whether dogs can smell cancer in normal breath. Also, whether this is a permanent skill that would be retained by dogs was not tested.

Finally, there are concerns that could arise over liability issues: who would be responsible when the dog makes a mistake?

Current detection methods for both lung and breast cancer are not flawless. For lung cancer, chest X-ray and sputum cytology (detecting cancer cells in coughed up fluid) fail to detect many early cases, and CT scan produces many false-positive results unless combined with expensive PET scans. Although it might be comparing apples and oranges, a $2.5 million CT scanner has an accuracy of 85 to 90%. Mammography also produces false-positive results, and it may be difficult in women with dense breast tissue. As such, another type of “pet”-scan, using dogs as a biological assay, might prove feasible for screening if supported by further research. Current tests are also expensive so the use of dogs for preliminary cancer testing could prove to be an affordable alternative for countries in the developing world.

What Is A Memory Foam Mattress?

What Is A Memory Foam Mattress?

By Heather Colman

Memory Foam is made with a polyurethane material. In order to increase its density, other chemicals are added which increases its viscosity level. The combination of the chemicals used determines the visco-elastic nature of the polyurethane foam and depending on such combination, the foam has the characteristic of being firmer in cooler temperature and softer in warmer environments. Higher density Memory Foam reacts with body heat. It reacts so that within a few minutes the product forms around the shape of the body. The property of the polyurethane foam could be demonstrated by pressing one’s hand on the foam and then on removing it. The foam retains a clear impression of the hand.

In 1970s, NASA developed Memory Foam for use in their space program. With the hope that with the ability of uniform distribution of pressure of such foam, the extreme G-force phenomenon would be taken care of. Ironically, the material was never used in any space program. In the 1990s, the product came onto the commercial market in the form of topper pads and then as foam mattresses.

A medical company, Tempur-Pedic, first realized the potential commercial application of the foam. They researched the various versions of the foam and came out with a product that they called “Tempur”. This Tempur was durable and had the property of pressure reduction.

When Memory foam first came out in the market, it was known as T-foam. It released chemical gasses making it unhealthy to be used in a closed environment. Over the years, this odor was reduced but could not be gotten rid of. The initial T-foam promised a great product as a bed topper or wheel chair cushion material. But it was noticed that it had issues with wear over a relatively short time. This early version of the foam was not found to be durable and would often crack and remain compressed after a while.

Memory Foam has shown excellent characteristics in responding to changes in temperature and its ability to reduce pressure by spreading the weight evenly over a larger surface area. Consequently, the foam also found an application in medical treatments of patients by preventing so called “bed sores” that a patient can develop when bed-ridden. In other medical applications, the foam is used in wheelchair seat cushions, pillows or padding for people suffering long- term pain from postural problems. For the heat retaining properties of the foam, it makes pain more bearable for a patient suffering from back injuries.

Memory foam is generally denser, making it heavier than other foams. Because it is heavier, the foam remains more supportive and comfortable. A new Memory Foam mattress has a chemical odor that is unpleasant to some people. Although airing does take most of this odor away, certain people remain sensitive to the smell.

Presently Memory Foam is used in many commercial products such as mattress toppers, mattresses and pillows, positional sleep aids, office furniture, automobile seat padding, footwear, infant cribs, car seats, wheel chair cushions, computer carrying cases, tennis racquet handles and more.

Israeli PM Ariel Sharon briefly opens eyes

Monday, January 16, 2006

Israeli media is reporting that Prime Minister Ariel Sharon opened his eyes for the first time since he suffered a major stroke on January 4, 2006.

However, hospital officials said the reports were generated by the Sharon family’s “impression of eyelid movement, whose medical significance is unclear.”

“He was listening to a tape of his grandson and you could see tears in his eyes for a matter of seconds before he closed them again,” a doctor treating Sharon told AFP news agency on condition of anonymity.

Army Radio, citing unidentified close associates of Sharon, say the Prime Minister could “recognize people around him.”

However, hospital officials state that it is “too early to tell whether the development represented a significant improvement or was just a temporary reflex.”

Sharon had undergone a tracheotomy on Sunday to help with his breathing and to help prevent infection from his respirator tube.

Japan Airlines to relist shares

Saturday, January 7, 2012

Japan Airlines (JAL) is planning on relisting its shares in an IPO on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. By September, JAL shareholders intend to sell between ¥500 billion and ¥1 trillion (US$6.4b – US$12.8b, 5b – €10b).

If the sale goes into high-end estimates, it will make JAL the largest airline in the world by market value. It will also be the largest IPO in Japan since the 2010 listing of Dai-Ichi Life. However, Senri Sasahara, chief executive officer of Innovative Advisor Corp, said “The amount sought may be a bit too ambitious.”

JAL entered bankruptcy protection in January 2010 and was later given a government bailout. When it was delisted from TSE, it cut one-third of its workers, and reduced the benefits of remaining employees. JAL emerged from bankruptcy in March 2011. Since then, it has posted a record ¥188.4 billion (US$2.4b, €1.9b) in profit for fiscal year 2010.

JAL faces growing competition from discount airlines, such as AirAsia Japan and Peach. In response, JAL entered into a joint venture to form a low-cost carrier with JetStar Airways.

University of Wales to close down after 120 years

Saturday, October 22, 2011

120 years after it was founded, the University of Wales (UoW) will shut down. Already comprised of several institutions, two will merge fully while two more will become independent universities.

With a charter from 1893 and the Prince of Wales as its chancellor, problems began at UoW last year after concerns the head of a Malaysian partner institution, a local pop artist, had non-legitimate qualifications. This was followed by Thailand’s authorities denouncing another UoW partner as illegal, then an investigation in the UK into all the UoW’s foreign ties.

The Quality Assurance Agency said UoW’s overseas checks on foreign institutions were inadequate. The UK Border Agency is investigating a possible visa scam whereby foreign students were sold exam answers for a qualification leading to UoW entry and British visas. Two colleges — Rayat London College and Lampton College — are suspended over the claims.

Trinity St David and Swansea Metropolitan universities are to merge, forming University of Wales: Trinity St David. It is to use the latter’s own royal charter, which is itself 190 years old. Newport and Glyndwr are set to become universities in their own right. The dissolution follows calls from the leaders of rival universities for the end of UoW.

“I warmly welcome the historic decision taken today by the University of Wales Council,” said UoW Vice-Chancellor Professor Medwin Hughes, who will fill the same role for the new University of Wales: Trinity St David. “The transformed University will serve and deliver for Wales.” His counterpart for Newport, Dr Peter Noyes, said “The inevitable end to the story of the University of Wales should not detract from a distinguished history lasting 12 decades. Wales should be sad that this day has come[.]” UoW chairmain Hugh Thomas has resigned.

The Prince of Wales is among past students, having spent a 1969 term there. The institution’s various member organisations at one point included the now-separate Cardiff University.

Daughter of Yuko Ikeda kidnapped to ransom in Tokyo; freed 13 hours later

Tuesday, June 27, 2006

Ikeda Kanako, a 21-year-old senior student of the Meiji Gakuin University and the first daughter of celebrity surgeon Yuko Ikeda, was kidnapped at about 1225 (UTC+9), June 26, 2006, in Shibuya, Tokyo.

A bullet was fired and one officer slightly cut when police stormed a Kawasaki apartment to rescue the girl.

Kanako was dressed in a white light half-sleeved cardigan, blue jeans with a bistre belt made of leather, a spring green camisole and carried a bag of Vuitton when she was abducted at a bus stop.

She was found unharmed 13 hours later by Japanese police at a condominium located in Nakahara-ku, Kawasaki, Kanagawa. The young woman’s make-up was not disordered; Kanako’s long brown fringe was not disheveled at all and she was wearing what she had been when she was kidnapped.

The kidnapping of Kanako was a big story in Japanese media in June, 2006. The story appeared in many newspapers as the front-page news on June 27, 2006.

Kanako and her kidnappers had been in touch with her mother using Kanako’s mobile phone. The effort to free her was helped greatly by a woman who witnessed the moment Kanako was taken; she wrote down the license plate of the van and other details.

Police traced mobile phone calls and were able to locate the van in Kawasaki where they detained two of the kidnappers as they went shopping.

One conspirator Li Yong, 29, from China, led the policemen to the apartment and tricked Kaneo Ito, 49, from Japan, to open the door. Ito managed to discharge one bullet before being restrained by an assistant police inspector, the first man in the room.

The other man involved in the kidnap of Kanako was Choi Gi Ho, 54, from South Korea. Kanato was freed unharmed.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department arrested three men on suspicion of conspiring to kidnap a woman and hold her to a reported 300 million yen ransom.

A Santa Barbara Dentist Emphasizes Oral Health Before Cosmetic Treatment

A Santa Barbara Dentist Emphasizes Oral Health Before Cosmetic Treatment

A Santa Barbara Dentist Emphasizes Oral Health Before Cosmetic Treatment

by

Jonathan Ziegelman

A good Santa Barbara cosmetic dentist will always emphasize oral health as part of a beautiful smile. He or she should ensure that patients have healthy teeth, healthy gums, and a functional bite before addressing cosmetics, because a healthy mouth is the foundation for a terrific smile. Healthy, well-aligned teeth are easier to brush and to floss, and have a lower risk of decay. Teeth that are healthy and well cared-for have lower rates of gum disease and do not normally hurt. Cosmetic procedures in an unhealthy mouth are like repainting a house that\’s falling down in that the results won\’t last.

Gum Disease Can Be More Destructive than Tooth Decay

Gum disease is quite common, but people tend to focus on the condition of their teeth more than on their gums. As a result, gum disease is often neglected. Even those with healthy teeth should have regular dental checkups so that gum condition can be assessed. Gum disease has been linked to numerous conditions affecting overall health, including heart disease. Caused by a build-up of plaque, gum disease affects around half of adults. Symptoms include sore gums, swollen gums, tenderness, redness, and bleeding after brushing.

Straightening Teeth Improves Oral Health

Your Santa Barbara cosmetic dentist isn\’t just trying to boost his or her income by suggesting orthodontic work. The fact is, straight teeth are generally healthier. They\’re easier to clean, and a proper bite makes it easier to chew the variety of foods necessary for a healthy diet. Fortunately, Invisalign \”invisible\” braces do a wonderful job of correcting crowded, rotated, or tilted teeth. They are also removable, and that allows patients to continue with healthy brushing and flossing habits more easily than with traditional braces. In only about 18 months, you could have the straight teeth you have always wanted.

Whitening Makes a Healthy Smile More Beautiful

Do you healthy, straight teeth that don\’t look good because of stains? A Santa Barbara cosmetic dental practice can help. Stains from foods, coffee, and smoking can be removed either in the office, or at home with a custom take-home whitening kit. Some stains, such as those caused by certain medications, limit the effectiveness of teeth bleaching, which only affects tooth surfaces. However, teeth that cannot be bleached can be whitened effectively through the use of beautiful porcelain veneers.

Veneers Create A Picture-Perfect Smile

Porcelain veneers don\’t require the level of tooth preparation that crowns do, and they can create an even, bright smile that you can be proud of. Some Santa Barbara cosmetic practices will recommend tooth whitening before veneers are added, so that the new veneers can be matched to your whiter teeth for an overall brighter smile. Veneers are great for fixing chips and minor breaks, lengthening worn-down teeth, and filling in minor gaps between teeth. In some cases, you may not need braces for a great smile, because veneers can take care of many gaps wonderfully. Whether you want teeth bleaching, Invisalign braces, or veneers, your first goal should be working with your Santa Barbara dental practice to make sure your teeth and gums are healthy.

When looking for a

Santa Barbara cosmetic dentist

, you might be surprised to learn that they will talk to you about your oral health first. A good
