Judge orders residents and city to come to agreement on partially collapsed building in Buffalo, New York

Thursday, June 19, 2008

Buffalo, New York —Judge Justice Christopher Burns of the New York State Supreme Court has ordered a halt to an emergency demolition on a 19th century stable and livery on 428-430 Jersey Street in Buffalo, New York that partially collapsed on Wednesday June 11, initially causing at least 15 homes to be evacuated. At least two homes remain evacuated.

Burns orders that both the city and the group Save The Livery (www.savethelivery.com) have to come to an agreement on what to do with the building, and try to work out ways of saving at least some portions if it including the facade, side walls and a lift tower. Save The Livery is comprised of concerned area residents who have grown to love the building’s historic and unique character. On June 14, they won a temporary restraining order to stop demolition. The court ruled that the city was only allowed to remove material in immediate danger to residents and pedestrians, but stated that the demolition could only be performed with “hand tools.” The court also ordered that any rubble which had fallen into neighboring yards when the building collapsed, to be removed.

“It is in the interest of the city to have a safe environment–but also important to maintain a sense of historical preservation,” stated Burns in his ruling. Burns has given the sides until tomorrow (Friday June 20) to come to an agreement and has ordered both parties to return to court at 9:30 a.m. (eastern time) “sharp.” Activists of Save The Livery urge supporters of the stable to “fill the courtroom” to show “continued and ongoing support.” The hearing is scheduled to take place at 25 Delaware Avenue in the Supreme Court building, 3rd Floor, trial part 19.

Currently the building is owned by Bob Freudenheim who has several building violations against him because of the buildings poor condition. He has received at least five violations in three months and residents who live near the building state that Freudenheim should be “100% responsible” for his actions. Many are afraid that if the building is demolished, Freudenheim’s charges of neglect will be abolished.

On June 17, developer and CEO of Savarino Companies, Sam Savarino was at the site of the stable, discussing the building with residents and preservationists. In 2006, Savarino proposed and planned The Elmwood Village Hotel, a ‘botique’ hotel on the Southeast corner of Elmwood and Forest Avenues. The project was later withdrawn after residents filed a lawsuit against Savarino and the city. Wikinews extensively covered the story, and contacted Savarino for his professional opinion on the building.

“[I would] love to see it preserved. I was there to see if there was anything we could do to help, to see if anything can be salvaged. I just want to see the right thing happen, and so does the city,” stated Savarino to Wikinews who added that he was allowed inside the building for a brief period.

“The side walls are beyond repair. The roof has rotted and it could come down at any time,” added Savarino who also said that the building “below the second floor appears to be stable.” He also states that the back wall of the building, which borders several homes, appears to be intact.

“Eliminating the back wall could be a problem for the neighbors. It is not unreasonable to leave at least 12 feet” of the back wall standing, added Savarino.

Savarino did not say if he was interested in buying the property, but did state, “I am sure there are a couple of people interested” in buying the property. On Thursday, Buffalo News reported that a “businessman” might be interested in purchasing the property, though Wikinews is not able to independently confirm the report. Savarino says that with the property still slated for emergency demolition, a potential buyer could face tax fees of nearly US$300,000.

Freudenheim gave the city permission to demolish the building on Thursday June 12 during an emergency Preservation Board meeting, because he would not be “rehabilitating the building anytime soon.” Freudenheim, along with his wife Nina, were part-owners of the Hotel Lenox at 140 North Street in Buffalo and were advocates to stop the Elmwood Village Hotel. They also financially supported a lawsuit in an attempt to stop the hotel from being built. Though it is not known exactly how long Freudenheim has owned the stable, Wikinews has learned that he was the owner while fighting to stop the hotel from being built. Residents say that he has been the owner for at least 22 years.

The building was first owned by a company called White Bros. and was used as a stable for a farm which once covered the land around the building for several blocks. The Buffalo Fire Department believes the building was built around 1814, while the city property database states it was built in 1870. Servants and workers of the farm were housed inside resident quarters situated at the rear of the building on what is now Summer Street, but are now cottages where area residents currently reside. Some date as far back as 1829.

At about 1950, the stable was converted into an automobile body shop and gasoline station.A property record search showed that in 1950 at least four fuel storage tanks were installed on the property. Two are listed as 550 square feet while the other two are 2,000 square feet. All of the tanks are designated as a TK4, which New York State says is used for “below ground horizontal bulk fuel storage.” The cost of installing a tank of that nature according to the state, at that time, included the tank itself, “excavation and backfill,” but did not include “the piping, ballast, or hold-down slab orring.” It is not known if the tanks are still on the property, but residents are concerned the city was not taking the precautions to find out.

Space Shuttle Endeavour lands in California

Monday, December 1, 2008

After windy and stormy conditions in Florida prevented its planned landing at Kennedy Space Center, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) decided to redirect the space shuttle Endeavour to California. It touched down successfully at Edwards Air Force Base at 1:25 p.m. local time, or 21:25, November 30, 2008 (UTC).

NASA normally prefers to land space shuttles at its home base, Kennedy Space Center. In this case, NASA will have to transfer Endeavour atop a jumbo jet from California to Florida at an estimated cost of US$1.8 million.

NASA had launched mission STS-126 on November 14 with eight astronauts led by Commander Christopher J. Ferguson. The mission was intended to make improvements to the International Space Station, including a new bathroom, sleeping quarters, and urine recycling system. The crew also successfully cleared metal shavings from a jammed solar wing rotary joint, which had affected energy production.

Upon the landing, Mission Control radioed, “Welcome back. That was a great way to finish a fantastic flight.”

“And we’re happy to be here in California,” replied Ferguson.

What Is A Tummy Tuck And Who Is A Candidate?

What Is A Tummy Tuck And Who Is A Candidate?

byAlma Abell

An abdominoplasty, also known as a Tummy Tuck in Wichita, is a cosmetic surgical procedure to remove the excess skin and fat from your abdomen. A tummy tuck will also tighten the muscles in the abdomen so you will have a tighter and firmer abdomen. Following the procedure, there will also be a significant reduction or removal of scars and stretch marks on the abdomen. There are three different types of tummy tuck procedures: standard tummy tucks, mini tummy tucks or extended tummy tucks.

Each procedure involves the removal of varying degrees of fat and skin and the degree of abdominal muscle tightening may vary on each procedure. Standard tummy tucks are the removal of fat and excess skin between the pubic area and the umbilicus (belly button). Following a full tummy tuck, there is a scar around the belly button and over the lower area of the abdomen, near the pubic area. If there is only a minimal amount off fat and skin in the lower part of the abdomen, a mini tummy tuck is done . The scar following a mini-tummy tuck is typically shorter than that of a full tummy tuck. An extended tummy tuck is typically done following a significant weight loss. An extended tummy tuck removes the fat and excess skin in the area from the abdomen as well as the lower back. The ideal candidate for a tummy tuck is someone who is at or near their ideal weight, but has an excessive amount of bulging or skin in abdominal area that you cannot get rid of.

This excess skin is often the result of multiple pregnancies, gaining and losing excess amounts of weight during and after pregnancy or if you were significantly obese and lost a great deal of weight. It is common for women to question whether they can get pregnant again following a tummy tuck and the answer is yes. If you get pregnant after a tummy tuck, there is no risk of harm to you or your baby, but there is a possibility that some of the effects of the tummy tuck will be undone.

Poggi Plastic Surgeryprovide tummy tuck treatment removes excess fat and skin, and also improves the appearance of the body.

London serial murder accused Stephen Port makes first court appearance

Tuesday, October 20, 2015

A London man charged on Sunday with drugging and murdering four men made his first court appearance yesterday. Stephen Port, 40, was remanded to appear before a higher court tomorrow.

Port faces four counts of murder and four counts of “administering a poison with intent to endanger life or inflict grievous bodily harm”. He is alleged to have administered overdoses of recreational drug GHB. He allegedly murdered the men at his home before dumping the bodies, after finding victims online using gay dating services.

Three of the deaths were last year. Anthony Patrick Walgate, 23, was found dead on June 19, 2014 in Cooke Street. Port lives in Cooke Street. The other three alleged victims were found in the vicinity of St Margaret’s Church on North Street. Gabriel Kovari, 22, was discovered dead on August 28. Daniel Whitworth, 21, was found dead the following month on September 20. Fourth alleged victim Jack Taylor, 25, was found a year later on September 14.

Whitworth and Kovari were known to each other, according to testimony at inquest. The Metropolitan Police has referred itself to the Independent Police Complaints Commission concerning what police called “potential vulnerabilities in [our response] to the four deaths.” Police did not initially link the deaths.

Special needs teacher Port, who was guarded by three officers in the dock, spoke in court to confirm his identity. He did not indicate if he will deny the offences. He was arrested following a police appeal to trace a man seen with Taylor shortly before his death.

Police at the time released security footage of Taylor’s movements, with an officer telling the press “the man captured on CCTV may well be the last person to talk to Jack.” The four deaths were finally linked and passed to the Metropolitan Police’s serious crime investigators on Wednesday last week.

The Magistrates’ Court ordered Taylor to appear at the Old Bailey, a famed London courthouse, tomorrow. He spent the hearing holding one arm, and repeatedly looking at the floor, whilst clad in a grey tracksuit given to him by the authorities holding him.

Latest trial of the One Laptop Per Child running in India; Uruguay orders 100,000 machines

Thursday, November 8, 2007

India is the latest of the countries where the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) experiment has started. Children from the village of Khairat were given the opportunity to learn how to use the XO laptop. During the last year XO was distributed to children from Arahuay in Peru, Ban Samkha in Thailand, Cardal in Uruguay and Galadima in Nigeria. The OLPC team are, in their reports on the startup of the trials, delighted with how the laptop has improved access to information and ability to carry out educational activities. Thailand’s The Nation has praised the project, describing the children as “enthusiastic” and keen to attend school with their laptops.

Recent good news for the project sees Uruguay having ordered 100,000 of the machines which are to be given to children aged six to twelve. Should all go according to plan a further 300,000 machines will be purchased by 2009 to give one to every child in the country. As the first to order, Uruguay chose the OLPC XO laptop over its rival from Intel, the Classmate PC. In parallel with the delivery of the laptops network connectivity will be provided to schools involved in the project.

The remainder of this article is based on Carla G. Munroy’s Khairat Chronicle, which is available from the OLPC Wiki. Additional sources are listed at the end.

Measure Available Space For A 72 Inch Bathroom Vanity

Measure Available Space For A 72 Inch Bathroom Vanity

Submitted by: Heather Mitchell

A 72-inch bathroom vanity can be one of the best things to add to your bathroom. This is a large space that can offer several functional things. It will first include two sinks on the top with plenty of counter space for things like a soap dispenser, toothbrush holder and other common items.

The body of the vanity will include a series of cabinets. These include a variety of different sizes for all sorts of storage needs.

The features that come with a 72-inch bathroom vanity can be valuable but it will be best to think about whether or not you can get something like this to fit in your bathroom. There are several standards to consider.

First, you will need to think about the length of a wall that your vanity will go on. This should be the wall that has the water connections that the vanity will link to. The vanity must fit around these spots. The holes at the back of the vanity must also fit in. Fortunately, the holes in a vanity will be evenly spaced out and designed to encourage a better design for the bathroom.

Your vanity should also be good enough to go along a mirror in your bathroom. You should see that your vanity is large enough to where your mirror will easily fit in front of it with little to no adjustments required.

The depth of your vanity is a big point to find. The depth can be at least twenty inches. This is enough to handle not only the sink space but also enough to make the cabinets in the vanity easy to manage with more storage space. This depth should fit through most doorways.

The height of your vanity should not be an issue in most cases. However, you can expect to find a vanity to be about thirty-six inches in height most of the time.

The flooring in your bathroom must also be reviewed. This includes looking to see if the construction of your vanity will overtake anything. You might need to get certain tiles removed or cut.

The floorboards in your bathroom must also be reviewed. You should see if your vanity is large enough to cover a floorboard without having to cut anything up. The best spots will be ones that are less likely to involve replacing items in their entirety depending on what you have.

You should also see if there are any caulk or grout borders that might get in the way of things. These include items like caulk that sets a bathtub or toilet in its place. You should review these points to see if you are getting things placed around as evenly as possible.

The last thing to do is to see if you have enough space for opening and closing doors and panels in your vanity. The things that are inside of your vanity should be easy to access at all times.

You should think about these points when figuring out if you can get a 72 inch bathroom vanity to fit in your home. You can get this kind of vanity to work well in any kind of space in your home if you are careful with it.
