Tips For Bathroom Remodeling In Rochester

byAlma Abell

The bathroom is one of the most important rooms in the home. You therefore need to make sure that it is in perfect condition at all times. Most of the times, when building the home for the first time, there are certain considerations that you might miss. The best way to correct the discomfort that results from these first mistakes in bathroom design is doing bathroom remodeling in Rochester. Below are some tips that will be of great help when it comes to bathroom redesigning.

One: creating more room

One of the main things that people who are remodeling bathrooms seek to address is the bathroom being too small. There are several ways in which you can maximize on space.

* Structures such as cabinets can be put high up to maximize floor space

* The number of sinks can be reduced

* One can knock down an adjacent wall and increase amount of space, especially if the adjacent room is a structure such as a walk in closet.

Redesigning bathroom structures

There are people that remodel bathrooms to improve structures such as doors, sinks, tub and vanity mirrors. With time, bathroom doors tend to rust or rot because of constant contact with water. Vanity mirrors also get affected by steam and end up aging faster than they should. Tubs get old and stained with age.

Replacing doors

Replacement doors should be treated to make them moisture resistant. This will stop rotting or rusting effect and the door will serve you for a longer period of time.

Replacing sinks, faucets, shower heads and the tub

Remodeling also involves changing faucets, taps that are leaking and sinks. The most important thing to note here is that the colors you choose should agree with the rest of the décor in the bathroom. It is also great to replace structures such as towel hooks and repaint the room to give it a new look.

Woman returns home with Christmas turkey, a month after setting out

Tuesday, January 19, 2010

A Scottish woman who set out before Christmas to purchase a turkey finally made it home on Monday, after being cut off by snow for a month. Kay Ure left the Lighthouse Keeper’s cottage on Cape Wrath, at the very northwest tip of Great Britain, in December. She was heading to Inverness on a shopping trip.

However on her return journey heavy snow and ice prevented her husband, John, from travelling the last 11 miles to pick her up. She was forced to wait a month in a friend’s caravan, before the weather improved and the couple could finally be reunited.

They were separated not just for Christmas and New Year, but also for Mr Ure’s 58th birthday. With no fresh supplies, he was reduced to celebrating with a tin of baked beans. He also ran out of coal, and had to feed the couple’s six springer spaniels on emergency army rations.

“It’s the first time we’ve been separated”, said Mr Ure in December. “We’ve been snowed in here for three weeks before, so we are well used to it and it’s quite nice to get a bit of peace and quiet.”

Benefits Of Hiring A Heating Contractor At Eastside Heating &Amp; Air Conditioning For Pre Season Heating Maintenance

Benefits Of Hiring A Heating Contractor At Eastside Heating &Amp; Air Conditioning For Pre Season Heating Maintenance

November, 2013 byAlma Abell

As winter approaches each year, it can be important for homeowners to have a repair person from a Heating contractor At Eastside Heating & Air Conditioning come to their home to inspect their heating system to ensure that it is not in need repairs and ready for the colder temperatures that the following months will bring. While there are some maintenance tasks a homeowner my be able to handle on his or her own, it can still be a good idea to have a professional handle the work, as they can give the unit a thorough inspection. Often this can result in repair issues being discovered before they cause a significant problem.

A technician will generally first want to check the thermostat on the unit and make sure it is working properly. They can do this by using a secondary temperature gauge such as an infrared thermostat gun and then comparing it to the temperature reading on the thermostat. If these two do not match, the thermostat will need to be adjusted accordingly.

Once the thermostat is tested, the Heating contractor At Eastside Heating & Air Conditioning will need to inspect the burner on the system. Many times the burner can be checked for problems just by looking at the color of the flames it produces. If flames are blue and steady then the unit is operating properly. If the flames are yellow or orange and flickering, the burner may be dirty can the unit is not getting enough air to operate properly. A repair person will need to spend time cleaning the burner and the burner tubes on the unit if this is the case.

The blower on the system can also become very dirty as well. Having a dirty system not only can be dangerous in some cases but it can cause the unit to operate much harder, which can decrease the length of time the unit will be in operation. In addition, dirty units require more power to operate and this can have a direct impact on the energy costs for the home. Cleaning the blower system is the best way to keep the unit clean. The filter will need to be inspected and replaced if it is dirty. The blower should be vacuumed out, both inside and out using a shop or home vacuum cleaner. Vents or grilles should be cleaned with a stiff brush.

Mysterious power failure takes down Wikipedia, Wikinews

This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Wednesday, February 23, 2005

On Monday, at 10.14 pm UTC, the Wikimedia server cluster experienced a total power failure, taking down Wikipedia, Wikinews, and all other Wikimedia websites.

The servers are housed in a colocation facility (colo) in Tampa, Florida, USA. They occupy two racks, with each rack receiving electricity from two independent supplies. However, both supplies have circuit-breakers in them, and both opened at the same time, leading to a total power failure. All computers immediately went down. It’s normal for fire safety regulations to prohibit uninterruptible power supplies in colos, with the colo providing its own UPS and generator instead. The circuit breakers were on the computer side of this emergency power system, so none of the computers continued to receive power to survive the breaker trip or shut down safely.

The actual reason why the circuit breakers tripped is currently unknown.

When power was restored, it was discovered that most of the MySQL databases that store the data which makes up Wikipedia et al had been corrupted. The main database and the four slaves had all damaged the data on their hard disk drives beyond the ability of the auto-correction to repair. Only one copy survived safely, on a machine that is used for report generation and maintenance tasks, which remained 31 hours backlogged while catching up after an unusually heavy update load during the previous week.

Volunteer Wikimedia engineers worked through the night rebuilding the databases from the sole good copy onto the other servers. The Wikipedia database is over 180Gb in size, making the copying process last 1.5 – 2 hours for every server it was performed upon.

Regular back-ups of the database of Wikipedia projects are maintained – the encyclopedia in its entirety was not at risk. The last database download was made on February 9; all edits since then could only have been laboriously rebuilt from logs and recovered from the damaged database requiring much more time and effort.

Limited read-only service was established late Tuesday afternoon, with editing becoming possible 24 hours after the power failure. Final repairs continue now, as well as upgrades to prevent similar issues in the future. Server-intensive features, such as categories and ‘watchlists’ that display recent changes to selected articles to registered users, remain disabled to ease the load on the recovering systems.

The process which led to the damage originated with the operating system, disk controllers, or hard drives failing to flush the data correctly.

If the power to a database server is cut mid-write, the database may be corrupted and unreadable, however the operating system, hardware, and software are designed to make this very unlikely. In a previous incident in 2004 power was also lost to a server but the database was undamaged.

To avoid such damage, each database server saves a copy of an edit to be applied to the database on a separate storage system before making the actual update to the database itself. This so-called ‘write-ahead logging’ should ensure that in the event of a system crash, the database can be rebuilt from a ‘last-good’ state by replaying the edits saved in the log.

Earlier this year popular blogging site LiveJournal suffered a similar power failure when another customer at their colocation facility pressed an Emergency Power Off button, intended for use only by firefighters. The company suffered database corruption similar to that seen at Wikimedia.

LiveJournal are now fitting UPS to their servers to ensure that they have time to shut down safely in the event of a power failure. Wikimedia was said to be investigating the possibility of fitting similar equipment at the time of this failure.

Several pundits have suggested that the use of another database, such as the proprietary database Oracle or the free PostgreSQL, would have avoided the database corruption seen at the server cluster. A post-mortem of the incident show the failure was in the operating system, or the hardware, or some combination of the two. LiveJournal, which also uses MySQL, reported similar database corruption after their power cut.

The Wikimedia foundation only allows the use of free software on its systems, and future versions of the Mediawiki software will support the PostgreSQL database.

Users are reminded that during times of system failure or excessive demand, they can still search Wikipedia using Google. The articles may be viewed using Google’s cache.

Second earthquake in eleven days hits New Britain, Papua New Guinea

Sunday, August 15, 2010

A second powerful earthquake of magnitude 6.3 has struck the island of New Britain in the Pacific Ocean region around Papua New Guinea, just 11 days after a damaging 7.0 quake left the western side of the island without power and communications for almost three days.

The epicenter of the quake, reported by the USGS to have struck at a depth of 197.2km (119.2 miles), was just 149 km (93 miles) from the main town on New Britain, Kandrian.

It hit at 1.10AM local time, Monday 16 August (15:09 UTC, Sunday 15 August).

There are no initial reports at time of press of casualties or damage, and no word at this time from the PTWC of any impending threat of a tsunami.

Thousands expected to protest at Forbes Global CEO conference in Sydney

Tuesday, August 23, 2005

Organisers of a protest march planned to occur in Sydney next week are predicting thousands of people will attend. The protest is timed to coincide with the Forbes Global CEO Conference, which starts at the Sydney Opera House the same day.

The action is being promoted by various trade unions and peace and social justice groups, and co-ordinated by the 30A Network, which is an informal association of such groups. A number of reasons have been given for the protest, including the Iraq War, globalisation, and the Australian government’s planned industrial relations changes.

The 30A network website is reporting that the protest has been endorsed by the NSW Fire Brigade Employees’ Union, the Maritime Union of Australia, the Australian Services Union, and the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union.

The NSW Police Service will provide free security for the conference. This is potentially controversial, as other events such as football games have to pay for police to attend. The decision has been criticised by the NSW Police Association, as they claim it will leave inner city stations short-staffed. The opposition police spokesman Mike Gallacher echoed the Association’s criticism, saying that the conference organisers should foot the bill themselves.

“Even though ASIO have identified it as a risk coming to Sydney, they can be guaranteed the best policing resources available in this country to hold their conference in a safe environment, but to do so they should have been asked to pay their way, to pay the bill,” he said.

A spokesman for the Police Minister said that frontline policing would not be affected.

New South Wales Premier Morris Iemma defended the use of taxpayers’ money on policing the conference.

“The advice I have is that ASIO have declared this as a medium-security event, which classifies it as warranting security. They do expect up to 2,000 protesters and if the local agricultural show had been subject to the same security assessment with potential protesters, they too would receive the same security response,” he said.

Tips For Giving Great Trade Show Giveaways

Tips For Giving Great Trade Show Giveaways

By Chris Arranaga

Trade show giveaways have been part of event promotion tradition for many years. Participating in trade shows is a part of operating a business. Companies set up displays that showcase their goods and services, and potential customers visit the booths and talk with representatives.

Usually, a trade show giveaway is a small promotional product imprinted with the exhibitor’s logo and message. It is given away as an enticement to attendees. It may motivate them to stop by the booth and speak to the company’s reps, or to follow up on a booth visit for later communication.

Business expos and fairs represent a great marketing opportunity for companies that participate. One way to capitalize on opportunities is by handing out personalized promo gifts, also known as trade show swag, tchotchkes, and freebies.

Of course, some promo gifts are more effective than others. These tips can help a company choose something that will add marketing value, instead of wasting advertising dollars.

1. Select some swag that emphasizes your message.

What sets one company apart from another, and what motivates someone to choose one business instead of its competitor? These questions are important to marketers, and they should be a top priority when choosing promotional giveaways. It’s easy to choose a standard pen, magnet, or key chain imprinted with your logo, but that doesn’t say much about your brand, your organization, or the value you offer to customers. Your swag should tie in to your brand’s theme.

2. Think about your target demographic and their needs.

Like all promotional products, a trade show giveaway is first and foremost a gift. It doesn’t have to be pricey, but it can still be useful and attractive to the people you want to impress. You probably know quite a lot about your client base, the sort of person who would want to work with your company. Are they mostly male or female? Younger or more mature? Do they have kids and pets? There are many inexpensive items tailored to a variety of interests.

3. Choose something that will get people excited.

Another reason to think beyond the standard choices is ‘booth buzz’ – the word on the street about which booths at the trade show are worth visiting. Obviously, you could get people talking by choosing something very valuable. A booth that gave away Smartphones and tablet computers to everyone who stopped by would attract a very large crowd, but that’s not a very effective use of marketing dollars. Consider planning ahead and creating something small but totally custom, so it’s fresh and unique.

4. Think past the end of the event.

You know those big trash cans that are all over a trade show exposition floor? The last thing you want is to see your swag in there. If you want to maximize your return on investment, it’s important to choose a giveaway that will be kept after the event. Also, make sure your company’s contact information, like a website URL or telephone number is included in the imprint. This will help them contact you when they’re ready to buy.

There are countless kinds of trade show giveaways that are affordable, practical, and unique. Working with a promotional product company will help you figure out which promo items will offer the most bang for your buck and generate positive booth buzz for your company.

Church of Scientology blames Pearl Harbor, 9/11 on psychiatry

Saturday, February 21, 2009

In an interview on a television show called the No Drug Show, hosted by Larry Byrnes, the Church of Scientology blamed both the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States and the attack on Pearl Harbor on psychiatrists and the drugs they prescribe their patients. Scientology considers psychiatry to be barbaric and a violation of human rights.

The video was posted on the video sharing website YouTube, but was later removed “due to a copyright claim by Axiom 10 Productions, Inc.” Mark Bunker of XenuTV questioned why Axiom 10 would utilize the Digital Millennium Copyright Act to remove the video from YouTube, as it was promoting their ideology about psychiatrists. It was later re-added to another site called Vimeo.com.

David Figueroa, a spokesperson for the Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR), a human rights group founded by the Church in 1969, said, “terrorism employs violence. Against not just the general public, like in 9/11, but against individuals when they are captured.” Figueroa is president of the CCHR organization in Florida.

“To take [a] person, and turn them into a killing machine, against their will or have them do things that are against their nature, you need something behind that. Psychiatrists employ drugs and conditioning techniques in order to change people from what they would normally be, into killing machines,” added Figueroa. He also says that the leader of al-Qaeda, Osama bin Laden got the idea to form the terrorist group from his second in command, Ayman al-Zawahiri in 1988. Then 13 years later, 19 terrorists hijacked four U.S. commercial airliners, crashing two into the World Trade Center towers, one into the The Pentagon and one into a field in Pennsylvania. The attacks killed nearly 3,000 people.

“He was [bin Laden] just transformed from someone who was a supporter” of the “jihad” against the Russian occupation of Afghanistan, into someone whose “whole thought patterns and his entire viewpoint was changed by Zawahiri, and by whatever types of drugs Zawahiri used to make that change in bin Laden, we don’t know”, said Figueroa, who adds that Zawahiri was acting as a “psychiatrist”. In another show hosed by Byrnes, former CCHR-International president Dennis H. Clarke claims Zawahiri to be a “psychiatrist, a therapist”; Zawahiri is referred to in this program as the “guy who runs” bin Laden. However, Zawahiri is actually a surgeon; he is not a psychiatrist or a psychologist.

Figueroa goes on to say that Japanese kamikaze pilots responsible for bombing Pearl Harbor, Hawaii in December of 1941 were “on amphetamines which is a psychiatric drug” when they attacked. However, the Japanese did not employ kamikaze tactics until later in the war. Wikinews has contacted the CCHR for a statement regarding Figueroa’s remarks, but have yet to receive a reply. Scientology-associated publications have also attributed tragedies including the Jonestown massacre and the Holocaust to psychiatry.

At the conclusion of the television program, the host promotes a brochure which he says illustrates how “notorious terrorist acts like 9/11 were basically created by psychiatrists operating behind the scenes”.

The issue of Scientology’s stance on psychiatry was brought to the forefront in the media during a 2005 appearance by Tom Cruise on NBC’s program Today with Matt Lauer. At the time Cruise told Lauer he was critical of psychiatry and the use of antidepressants. In a December 2008 appearance on the Today show on a promotional tour for his film Valkyrie, Cruise told Lauer he wanted to apologize and felt he appeared arrogant in his 2005 interview.

This is not the first time the Church made false accusations for acts of violence. In October 2008, the Church falsely accused the internet protest group Anonymous of a 2007 school shooting in Finland. They accused Anonymous of being involved in the November 2007 shooting at Jokela High School, in which a man named Pekka-Eric Auvinen shot and killed nine people, including himself. The Church accused Auvinen of being part of Anonymous, and further accused the group of plotting the attack. The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) in Finland later told Wikinews that Anonymous had nothing to do with the crime.
