IRS goes after eBay sellers

Monday, March 28, 2005

San Jose, California — As the April 15 deadline for U.S. private citizens to file their 2004 income tax returns draws near, the government is reminding sellers on eBay that they may have to report any proceeds from sales on the auction site as taxable income.

This could be a surprise to some of the 135 million registered eBay users who consider trading on San Jose-based auction site to be a non-taxable hobby. Complicating matters, eBay says it doesn’t report individual sales figures to the government – users are responsible to report any profits on their own tax returns.

The amount of money traveling through eBay is big business. $33.8 billion worth of merchandise was sold on the site in 2004, up from $5.2 billion in 2000.

Although eBay pays taxes on its share of the sales (5.25 percent cut from each transaction as of Feb. 18), the IRS fears some small businesses are using the site to dodge tax responsibility. Adding to the confusion, some sellers may legally be a taxable business without realizing it.

The U.S. Internal Revenue Service has a nine-point checklist it uses to determine whether or not a money-making activity is legally a business, which means money made is taxable, or a simple hobby – where it is not taxable. The IRS can consider a person to be a legal “business” even though they never incorporated or claimed to be one.

According to Woodbury, New York-based accountant Bart Fooden in an Associated Press interview, the IRS looks for such things as evidence that the auction seller depends on the eBay sales income to pay for activities other than maintaining the hobby, acts in a businesslike manner when selling on auctions or puts enough time and effort into the eBay activities that there is an obvious intent to make a profit.

But Fooden said in the same interview casual users probably have nothing to worry about. Those cleaning out closets or the garage and selling off junk for less than the original price paid are not turning a profit, so that money is not considered income and is not taxable.

England’s elderly face human rights breaches in home care system

Wednesday, November 23, 2011

A report published today by the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) finds that, in many cases, England’s home care system breaches the human rights of the elderly it is supposed to serve. The Close to home: older people and human rights in home care report is the result of a twelve-month investigation into care generally provided by local authorities.

Approximately half of those receiving home care, plus friends and family, providing evidence to the inquiry were satisfied with the quality of care provided. However, the report stresses that there are “systemic problems” arising from “a failure to apply a human rights approach to home care provision”. The report asserts that it is generally not the fault of individuals providing care, but serious problems exist as local authorities seem unaware of their obligations under the Human Rights Act and fail to commission, procure, and monitor care accordingly.

The report says articles two, three and eight of the European Convention on Human Rights are frequently being breached. These, respectively, cover an individual’s right to life, protection from inhumane and degrading treatment, and respect for dignity and personal independence. Criticisms include that care is not provided in a common-sense manner, and funding of care for the elderly is at lower levels than for younger people with similar problems and needs.

The EHRC’s investigation highlights a range of recurring complaints and attempts to identify the underlying causes; cost is repeatedly mentioned, with use of the private-sector leading to some local authorities offering a “one size fits all” service leaving many elderly feeling they are “a task to be undertaken” and have “little or no choice” as to help received, or when care workers visit. A failure to invest in care workers is noted, with significant responsibility and the wide range of skills required being rewarded with low pay and status; this, the report states, adversely impacts staff retention and, a high turnover of care workers can put the security of care recipients at-risk.

Within the wider investigation, a commissioned independent social report by The Arndale Centre conducted in-depth interviews with a cross-section of 40 elderly individuals receiving home care. As-stressed in the report, those selected were not on the basis of good, or bad, experiences with their – mainly local authority-provided – care. It highlights a widespread feeling amongst those interviewed that they are treated “like a number”, and that aspects of the care provided lead to, or fail to resolve, feelings of social isolation.

The Manchester-based Arndale Centre report concludes that, “[t]he general picture is of a wider home care system in which older people are noteffectively involved: which they do not understand, and which does not often make the extra effort required to involve them in ways tailored to their state of health and other needs”.

nobody to talk [to] face to face. Nobody will knock on that door,[…] a life of isolation.

A recurring theme in the responses of those interviewed is the social isolation that their home care is not adequately addressing. One male interviewee in his seventies who previously used a scooter to get about said in his interview, “I haven’t been out of the house now for about four weeks. I daren’t. The last time I went out on the scooter I hit the kerb and it frightened the living daylights out of me.” Another, an 85-year-old woman who lives alone, expressed sadness at her inability to do normal things, “I would love to go to town to do some shopping. I haven’t been to town for about two years… Wander round the town and have a cup of tea… I’d love that.”

The social isolation many elderly experience was summed up neatly by another woman in her eighties in her interview: “When you go now, I will maybe not talk to anybody till tomorrow; maybe the whole of tomorrow nobody to talk [to]… face to face. Nobody will knock on that door, that is it, a life of isolation.”

The EHRC, having commissioned this report in the face of funding changes and reform of the care system, intends to press for legislative changes to ensure those receiving care at home are given the same protections under the Human Rights Act as those in residential care. In the conclusions of their report they offer to work with, and support, local authorities in understanding and delivering care that respects peoples’ rights and dignity; and, recommend better guidance as to the choices available to the elderly, and their families, be made available.

Providing Relief For After Chemotherapy Effects

Providing Relief For After Chemotherapy Effects

By David Klein

While it is true that there is still no proven evidence that home remedies for cancer are truly effective, making use of some essential natural treatments while going through chemotherapy may help relieve the side effects that the treatment is bringing about. Though their main purpose is to minimize the degree of side effects suffered by a patient undergoing chemotherapy, still to make them more recognizable, the vast majority who makes use of them refer to these substances as home remedies for cancer.

Some Home Remedies for Cancer

The most common side effect of chemotherapy is obviously hair loss resulting to baldness. While the hair may still re-grow after sometime; in case you are eager to have them back at once is to try using common remedies for hair loss like aloe. Aloe Vera is the plant that has been widely recognized for its ability to let the hair grow again just by applying aloe extract to the part without hair.

After every chemotherapy session, you will usually feel dizzy and nauseated. To help you with this symptom, make thin slices of ginger, put it in the fridge then afterwards immerse in a cup of hot water. You should drink this as a tea after every chemotherapy session to help minimize the nauseated feeling.

One of the most effective home remedies for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy is acupuncture. This is intentionally to relieve nausea that is often felt after every session. This can also be considered as effective home treatment for headache bouts during the cancer attack episodes of the patient.

While there are times when you are feeling exhausted, cancer patients must try to motivate themselves sometimes to exercise. This can help them feel a little better and also free themselves of the stresses that they are encountering.

Of course, drinking lots of water keeps you hydrated though, doctors warn not to drink mineral water since it can lead you to be in an alkaline state. Always remember that, only drink fresh tap water though.

In case you want an instantaneous home remedy for baldness, there is of course a solution to that get yourself a wig. If this is the only way for you to uplift your spirits during this battling moment of your life, why not buy one?

Other home remedies you can use for cancer:

Cancer Home Remedies with Garlic:

Garlic is a naturally powerful antibiotic that stimulates the immune system and effectiveness of white blood cells and T cells.

Garlic is an extremely important natural resource to ensure optimal immunity and protection from germs. It also has extremely resourceful anti cancer properties. Clinical research proves that garlic is very effective in prevention and cure of various types of cancer.

Have a clove or two of garlic everyday. Chew it or if you prefer to swallow it then do the same.

Natural Treatments for Cancer with Licorice Root:

Licorice roots, according to the herb masters around the world is among the two or three most important herbs in the world.

The Chinese consider licorice more important an herb than giensing. Licorice root essentially has a powerful potentiating effect on the human reticuloendothelial system, the primary line of defense against microorganisms. There is nothing like having fresh licorice but if that is not possible there are licorice capsules available.

There are many home remedies for cancer but the most ultimate and the most powerful one is the Power of Prayers. No doubt, this is indeed one of the best home remedies for cancer.

Two tornadoes touch down near Wellington, Utah

Tuesday, July 27, 2010

Two tornadoes touched down around the same time yesterday afternoon near the small town of Wellington, Utah in the Mill Creek Subdivision area. Initial reports are that both tornadoes rated somewhere between F0 and F1, on the lower end of the Fujita scale. Several trees were reported to have toppled over, a mobile home was severely damaged, and a travel trailer was reported to have been thrown over 50 yards. Other homes had minor damage.

It is exceedingly rare for a tornado to touch down in settled areas of Utah, and even more rare for two to touch down at the same time. The last tornado to touch down in Utah was the Salt Lake City tornado in 1999.

Wellington is about 130 miles (200 km) by road south-east of Salt Lake City, the capital of the US state of Utah.

400 Australian soldiers sent to Afghanistan

Sunday, August 20, 2006

400 Australian soldiers have been officially farewelled at parade in Darwin, NT, ahead of their deployment to Afghanistan on Tuesday. Wishing the soldiers well, Defence Minister Brendan Nelson says there is a high risk associated with the mission.

“We know that this is a dangerous mission but it’s also an extremely important one,” he said. “They will go beginning this week and be deployed over the next few weeks.”

The group will work around the southern Oruzgan Province. Rising violence in the Taliban heartland province earlier this month prompted Australian Prime Minister John Howard to further strengthen the capability of the Reconstruction Task Force (RTF). Approximately 150 personnel will be added to the 240-strong force announced in May.

Defence says the RTF will form part of the Netherlands-led Provincial Reconstruction Team in the Oruzgan province under NATO.

More than 1800 people have been killed in fighting in Afghanistan this year, 92 of them foreign soldiers (12 being Canadian). A contingent of 190 Australian special forces, supported by a 110-member helicopter detachment, has suffered a steady flow of casualties since September year, with 11 wounded — a rate of one a month. The Age reports the Howard Government has “kept secret” how soldiers suffered the wounds, or the extent or nature of the wounds.

Dr Nelson said the soldiers would perform command, construction, communications intelligence, protection and logistics support. “We must stick with our allies and stand up for our values,” he said. He told the troops they would be “dealing with people who are fanatically opposed to our way of life and everything we stand for”.

Dr Nelson says the Australian contribution will also include skills training for the local population to “ensure the benefits of the deployment continue long after our personnel have returned home.”

Posture Brace Why You Need Them

Posture Brace Why You Need Them

Submitted by: Verena Lenhart

It is very important for a person to have a correct posture. Correct posture not only makes on look fit, it also enhances the process of digestion and proper blood circulation. It is healthy to have a god posture. However people with a bad posture are very common these days. Slouched shoulders are seen everywhere. A bad posture develops due to bad sitting or standing habits. Slouched shoulders not only look bad but they can also be a source of pain. Generally it causes a pain in the lower portion or the middle part of the back. To rectify bad postures and for a healthy living, those who have slouched shoulders often go for posture aids like a Posture Brace.

Generally the problem of back pain is seen in those who have desk jobs. They are working nearly ten hours a day sitting in the same chair more than often in the same posture. This is bound to have consequences and all the stress manifests itself in the back pain. In this case also a definite way to find relief is to take the help of a Posture Brace, since they will be a relief to one s back. It is better to take an aid for a good posture than have a bad one since it may detrimental effects on our health. There are many areas of work which requires either a strenuous exercise of the back and people who are a part of that working area have often been found complaining of such pain.

A Posture Brace function scientifically. Those with slouched shoulders have a tendency of the shoulders jutting forward. These aids will help the shoulders to pull backward. At the same time it also applies pressure on the middle of one s back which forces the midsection to come forward. This is an ideal posture. If one is conscious enough one can achieve this posture even without the help of any aids, but people do not consider this to be a major problem and hence they do not pay much attention to their posture. As many have said it is essential to have a nice form. It looks good as well apart from being healthy. Many people those who have desk jobs or are into professions like dancing are very conscious of this fact and take the aid of a Posture Brace.

Doctors and physiotherapists also recommend aids for proper posture as means of treatment. These aids will definitely decrease one s back pain since they put the back in a relaxing posture. This will cause lesser tension in the area and will inevitably decrease the rate of head aches. This also increases the blood circulation. Standing upright with a good posture will boost up someone s confidence. Some people do not want to take the help of aids but sometimes it becomes necessary. The use of such aids for a prescribed period of time will ensure a good posture for the rest of one s life.

One should however be very choosy when it comes to purchasing posture aids. This is not a simple task and is unquestionably a time consuming one. There are many varieties of posture aids available. The job of those hoping to buy one is to try them on first and find the perfect fit which will give them maximum support and comfort. If one ends up with a posture brace of a bad fit, it can be a real pain and instead of addressing the problem it might just aggravate it. Posture Brace is available everywhere and in any medical store. They are also available in the internet and online selection can be done as well. For the benefit of one s posture and for health reasons it sometimes becomes necessary to use posture aids.

“Anonymous” plans to protest Church of Scientology on February 10

Tuesday, January 29, 2008

The Internet-based group “Anonymous” released a new video on YouTube Monday, announcing international protests outside Church of Scientology centers set for February 10. The video “Call to Action” uses the same computer synthesized voice as a previous video titled “Message to Scientology”, which was posted to YouTube last Monday. The “Message to Scientology” video has been viewed over 1,400,000 times, and the “Call to Action” video has already been viewed over 237,000 times.

Anonymous is taking action against the Church of Scientology in response to what it sees as suppression of freedom of speech on the Internet. The group was first motivated after the Church of Scientology issued a copyright infringement claim to YouTube regarding a promotional video of Scientologist Tom Cruise speaking about his beliefs and using Scientology jargon. The Church of Scientology also issued a legal complaint to the website Gawker.com which is also hosting the video, but Gawker has stated it will not take the video down because it is newsworthy.

Anonymous set up a movement called “Project Chanology” to coordinate their efforts, and took down several Church of Scientology websites through denial-of-service attacks. Members of Anonymous have also participated in prank calls to Church of Scientology centers, as well as protests or “raids” outside Scientology buildings, and have posted some of their exploits to YouTube.

Anonymous is a collective of individuals united by an awareness that someone must do the right thing.

In the “Call to Action” video, Anonymous denies that they are composed solely of “super hackers”, stating “Anonymous is a collective of individuals united by an awareness that someone must do the right thing, that someone must bring light to the darkness, that someone must open the eyes of a public that has slumbered for far too long.” The video goes on to state “We want you to be aware of the very real dangers of Scientology,” citing what they term “gross human rights violations”.

Specific controversial events in Scientology history are cited in the video, including Operation Freakout and Paulette Cooper, and Operation Snow White. Operation Freakout was the name of a Church of Scientology operation whose goal was to “get P.C. [Paulette Cooper] incarcerated in a mental institution or jail or at least to hit her so hard that she drops her attacks.” Paulette Cooper had written a book critical of Scientology called The Scandal of Scientology. Operation Snow White was the name of a Church of Scientology operation where members of the Church’s secretive Guardian’s Office infiltrated United States government agencies in Washington, D.C. including the I.R.S. The F.B.I.’s investigation into Operation Snow White led them to discover the planning of actions taken against Paulette Cooper.

The video concludes by inviting the viewer to “take up the banner of free speech” and protest with Anonymous world wide. In an email to CNET News, Anonymous stated that cities where unknown activities are planned on February 10 include New York City, Montreal, Houston, London, Melbourne, and Los Angeles.

On Friday, two spokespersons for the Church of Scientology commented on the recent actions of Anonymous. A spokesman told News.com.au “These types of people have got some wrong information about us,” and Church spokeswoman Yvette Shank told Sun Media that she regarded members of Anonymous as a “pathetic” group of “computer geeks”. On Monday, Radar reported that the Church of Scientology has asked the U.S. Attorney General‘s office in Los Angeles, the F.B.I., and the LAPD to start a criminal investigation of possible criminal activity related to the Internet attacks. A source told Radar that the Church of Scientology is arguing that the Internet attacks are a form of “illegal interference with business.” Radar also reports that the Church of Scientology is emphasizing its status as a religious organization in the United States, in order to assert that the Internet attacks can be classed as hate crimes.

I’m mainly concerned because you shouldn’t be doing things that are illegal, you just shouldn’t.

On Saturday, Mark Bunker of the website XenuTV.com posted a video to YouTube criticizing the illegal actions of Anonymous and suggested legal methods for them to retaliate against the Church of Scientology, including peaceful protesting, writing letters to their government representatives, and persuading the United States government to take away the Church of Scientology’s tax exempt status. In the video, Bunker states “I’m mainly concerned because you shouldn’t be doing things that are illegal, you just shouldn’t. It’s not morally right, and it’s not right when Scientology does it, it’s not right when we do it.” Bunker’s video post has been viewed over 156,000 times. On Sunday, Bunker posted a follow-up video to YouTube where he gives advice to Anonymous on how to peacefully picket. He also provides viewers with resources and weblinks to more information on how to hold a peaceful protest. He concludes this video by imitating Obi-Wan Kenobi‘s Jedi mind trick technique and voice from Star Wars, stating “And if I may, as Obi-Wan, tell you: You will do nothing illegal “.
